Most of the rest of the world, including many of those who decide How It
    Will Be Done, are idiots.

I approve of the XML approach, despite Champ scoffing when I said it was
    "the way of the future".

Literally "purely to display", or to then produce pretty pie charts
    with?

The same logic is used by the supplier of our main Sculptor based
system. Anything it can't handle and needs a bit of extra
post-processing for they knock up an Excel workbook and VBA macros (plus
Word macros or their own 'wordtool' for automating mail merges and
document production). The generic ones are OK and do more or less what
is needed, but they seldom do exactly what we want. They will tweak them
or create a new one to requirements but their rates to do so take the
piss. I've become a dab hand at hacking them as necessary, but often I
just think **** this for a game of soldiers and crank up VFP to provide
a bespoke solution distributed to those few users that need the added
    functionality.
    Sounds a familiar scenario.

It's certainly the way of the present, but no doubt something will come
along to replace it in the future. The major bank interfaces all use
XML though (or the financial extension of it), so I can't see it
    disappearing anytime soon.
    Definitely the former.
