What, about 10 minutes to ghost restore from your backup ? [1]

I think you overplay the issue.

    P.

    [1] You /do/ have a recent ghost backup of your OS ... ? ;)

I know you're tickling WUN but seriously though, how many people do
    regular backups?

I do, as my OS is on a mirrored disk and "My Documents" are configured
to use "Offline Sync'd Files" in conjunction with my Linux box.

I have Norton Ghost, but have never had the need to use it.

  7. No.

I keep a couple of important things on a USB HDD, but I'm terrified
that the worst that'll happen to it is that I'll lose it.

I have an external HDD, but that's for portability rather than
    backups.

The truth is that I just can't figure out a strategy that works for
me. Haven't given it much thought, of course...

Heh. I had a backup, but I just reinstalled XP, it was probably about
    time to do that anyway.

The only thing I lost was an iTunes album that I'd bought the previous
day, and those nice people at Apple have just replaced it FOC.

Mind you - all my essential stuff exists on at least 2 machines. And
one of those gets backup up to a nice little DDS-3 library that I
    scarfed off Ebay..
I have install images for all my Windows machines (do complete setup,
install required apps then take Ghost images) so that I can put the
system partition (you do have your OS on a separate partition to all
you data don't you?) back in place when Windows craps itself..

It's been a while since I've done a tape backup. I should do it again.
BTW, have you (or anyone else) got experience of this:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/g4l

    Ghost for Linux.
Heh, that goes without saying. Being a techie helps you pick up all the
tips and tricks. Mind you, I've found XP to be fairly stable as an OS
and haven't (touch wood) had to do a complete reinstall for at least a
couple of years now. Even my work PC hasn't required a reinstall for a
    long time.

Me too, most stuff gets copied between Win2k and Solaris/Samba or onto
    a USB key.
Me either. I've got an old exabyte kicking around somewhere, or a dds3
if I can be assed picking it up from work.
I'm back in the bad old days still with Windows 2000, Still get the odd
blue screen when something goes TU in the registry.

Never did feel the need to go to XP, since it contains all the hardware
    registration crap.

Maybe i'll be persuaded when Windows Vista hits the streets ...

  12. Don't hold your breath. And it'll be even more privacy-intrusive than
XP - and DRM'd up to the hilt.

Heh, TBQH, I don't do much PC tinkering anymore now I've got my P4.
Before I was always swapping stuff around between AMD and Intel, or
changing MoBo's/Disks. When I heard that XP only allowed a couple of
changes before needing to be unlocked, I lost interest
Oh, sure, I expected nothing less. I think my hardware will be pretty
much static though for the moment.

For what i'm running (Photoshop being the biggest killer) a P4 (1.8
    IIRC) is fine.

The Suse box is a Dell SMP twin P3 box.

    Cheers

    Paul.

You don't even need Corporate. The version that came with my Dell
laptop doesn't have any hardware activation stuff.

Mine you, it is XP Pro rather than Home if that makes a difference.

Acutally, I've just googled. Not 100% yet but getting there. If only
all my software worked on a Mac.

I'd be happy with Bochs or VMWare working on an Intel Mac, then I'd just run
Windows in a VM. Should be pretty swift now that the processors are
aligned. Dual boot's OK, but a bit of an arse if you have to keep swapping
    environments

Yeah, I've just looked to see if VMWare support the Mac but it doesn't
appear so. That would be the perfect solution.

Particularly as I already have a load of VMWare workstation VM
    templates.

You didn't google very far. There was a bit on the reg last week. Unless
the prize has been withdrawn, or you're not talking about the intel based
    ones, or someone was fibbing.
