Never used gmail, but I'm talking about eight years' worth of emails
here, and I get hundreds, sometimes thousands a week, many of which
are diverted into the very folders I'm trying to save. So the sheer
volume would counter-indicate that approach. Worth thinking about
    though, I guess.

  2. I'm with Krusty on this. Dump your .pst's into Gmail and then have a
rule set up that all new mail received, and set, is also sent to your
    gmail.

Gmail doesn't do folders, but it does labels, which sounds rubbish but
is actually much more useful. It's also very very easy to search, if
you have half and idea what you want to search for.

Indeed they are. If you can persuade thunderbird to import your existing
archive from .pst all will be well.
Hoh yus. Also, straight to Access from Outlook 2003, which I now realise
I have on my system but have never used before. The problem being
    attachments are lost.
Hold fire. As an experiment I set up my Outlook 2003, squeezed a message
out and then tried to get it out with the mail_archive application and
    got an error.

There are other shareware utilities out there though that might work OK.

Once they deny .pst archiving, Krusty's strategy might also work with
your ifrance account (assuming it supports PoP3 collection and you have
the rights to set that up using thunderbird on the machine you want to
    use).

I can't see how the thunderbird import solution will work once you can't
    create .pst files.

Ta. Certainly doing something, but I think it may do better hooked up
at work instead of working remotely. I'll let it run for a while more
    yet.

I was hoping I'd just be able to C&P the emails themselves. No?

I'd try that. It'll be dog slow, if you've got a big PST and are
    running through a VPN.

In the very worst case scenario, you can drag and drop the emails into
    a standard folder.

Well if I can drag from my Outlook inbox into the Tbird folder
structure it's exactly what I'm looking for. This completely mimics my
current working practice of just copying my inbox into an archive
folder every six months or so.

I've got a fairly usable macro, found somewhere on interweb that
extracts the attachments to a separate folder. I use it to reduce the
size of the .pst files, if it would be any help I can email it. In
fact it's only a couple of dozen lines so could be posted here.

I thought it was contraindicate, or is that to do with identifying
    certain Nicaraguans?

I think if you're making words up you can spell them how you like.
Your spelling is perhaps more common in medical circles, but mine
    might be more general.
    Heh.

I don't think so - I've never heard it used in my industry, for
example. It immediately smacked of 'meds' to me.

Well I've given up on thunderbird now, as it just doesn't do anything,
so I though I'd give it a try, but get a Site blocked message
    "Malicious Web Sites;Security "
Even trying to open it via a web proxy just hangs it. I may try from
home tonight, but in the meantime I'm just exporting everything to
..csv files, as suggested elsewhere. At least this actually seems to
work, although searching and sorting may be less than simple. Still,
at least I won;t lose anything.

Well as it doesn't even work at importing the .pst files, I thought
    I'd give it a try.
Nope. Doesn't allow anything to be copied, except as raw text, from
Outlook to Tbird. So I'm giving up on it, but thanks for the effort.

    Any other bright ideas anyone?
