Lovely - reminds me of Stephen Fry's Winston Churchill
    anecdote:
"Churchill was woken by his secretary with the news that a back bench
    MP
had been caught naked on Hamstead Heath, having sex with a Grenadier
Guard. Churchill asked "wasn't it very cold last night"? Yes said the
secretary , actually it was one of the coldest nights this year.
"Doesn't it make you proud to be British"said Churchill

Heh, I was wondering how the hell I managed to do the previous year
without the EX02 electrically heated waistcoat and gloves. Having a very
comfortable touring bike was a lovely experience too.

Everything else he mentions is identical to our trip, except we could do
90mph through the blizzard on the autobahn.

I sat outside a service station drinking coffee and having a smoke
with him and all he wanted to do was find a hotel asap. I suppose this
might have been because he'd spent the previous night camped in a
motorway service station and was feeling rather cold at that point but
when I offered to give him the address of the hotel we were using
about 100 miles away he declined.

I was a bit disappointed not to catch up with him at the rally because
he'd done a brilliant job getting there on that bike.

We found his tent and flagpole and stood around shouting "Bob!
Booooooooooooooooob!!" for a bit but no response.

heh. I'm sure i've recounted this story before (probably to you) but
when I climbed Ben Nevis on the 20 Dec one year, I caught up with a
pair of blokes who were doing the same ascent. The snow got worse and
worse toward the top (between what was coming down and what we were
walking through) so we made it as a team effort, even sharing a pair
of crampons and an ice axe between 2 of us.

Coming down after a fairly arduous day, I said "i'm off back to my
hotel, where are you guys staying" ?

Turns out they were bivvying in a ditch nearby, whereas I was going
back to an extended lock in, in a pub in Fort William :)

    Paul.
