I remember that the Danish Goldwing Club had brought a few bikes along
to the show, but that was - as far as I remember - all that there was,
    regarding sidecar motorcycles.
But then again, if I could choose between a sidecar combo, or a heated
    seat/ditto handlebars - I'd definitely choose the latter. ;-)
But then again, we rarely get as much snow here as they get in Sweden -
    sidecar or not:

It sure looks like a fun ride to me. :)

    Sincerely,

    Aragorn.

Excellent. Looks like the Krystalltreffen would be doable on a solo.

    Krystalltreffen is just finished.

Four participants came from Sheffield on Honda Cubs.

What were the road conditions and temperatures like?

Temperature at Lom was -20 deg.C, here on the coast about -5 deg. C.
Roads were largely cleared, at least in the coastal regions. Inland and
in the mountains snow and ice. Lots of snow in the mountains during the
    weekend.

Hmmm, interesting. I presume the major routes (E6 etc) are all kept open
    whatever the weather?

What sort of daily mileages and speeds do you tend to average?
Would you consider it possible to travel much further North
(say, erm, Alta, for instance) at that time of year on two wheels?

    That'll do for me.

If you're local how do you fancy being our 'man on the ground' and
handing out a bit of local knowledge/advice because it looks like a
few intrepid explorers will be going next year?

All we'll be looking for is advice on routes, timescale to cover
certain distances and where to stop along the way. If you live along
our projected route we can offer the opportunity to get pissed with
the idiots and laugh as we head off into the cold.

Replying to here will give you the opportunity to be on one of the
most exclusive mailing lists in the World plus it will give you an
enormous sense of inner well being if none of us die...

You'd think that, but... Sheffield's up north, isn't it? Maybe that was
    the best they could afford.

Not quite, some of the mountain crossings in the north may close due to
weather conditions. Convoys across some of them are quite common. In
those conditions (whiteout) motorbikes won't be allowed to pass.
If weather conditions and the authorities1) allow, I should think you
could get all the way to the North Cape. I don't know if the road up
the last ten - fifteen km is kept open in winter, but the snow should
not get too deep for a bike to pass.

1)they will stop you if they see you and if they think the trip will
    kill you

Not really local to the route I would recommend, if you want the
posibility of stable road conditions. I live near Bergen, and
conditions here are best described as changeable. It all depends on how
you propose to get to Norway in the first place. There are no longer
any ferries directly from the UK to Norway.

The local paper wrote a bit about the fellows from Sheffield, their
route was to ride to Harwich, ferry to Esbjerg(?) in Denmark, Ride to
Hanstholm and then ferry to Bergen and finally ride to Lom.
When you consider Norwegian regulations concerning traffic you have to
allow for more time than you would anywhere else.
Covering more than 60 - 70 km per hour would be difficult.

Thanks for that. We'll (some of us anyway) almost certainly go next
year but some are planning something even colder for the following
    year...

Still in Norway but nearer to the North Pole.

It takes us 3 months to decide where we're going then another 6 months
to decide on the route then the last 3 months to try and get the
chosen bikes into something approaching a bike suitable for taking to
    a winter rally.
