I have decided I need a new car. I have a Micra. Yes, yes, stop laughing
at the back. It is one of the most reliable cars I have owned but it is
doing my head in. It is just too small and too slow and after ten months
    I've had enough.

I really quite fancy an Audi 80. It would still need to be of this kind
of age as funds are limited. What is the FOAK's opinion of these cars?

Also, to get one at a reasonable price it looks as if I might have to take
the EBay route. I will also probably have to buy one many miles from home
over yonder hills and dales to get one at the right price as there aren't
a right lot in this land of haggis, kilts, claymores and mudhuts.

This leads me to my second request. I don't need it right now, but,
should I find a car I really quite like would the UKRM underground be
willing to mobilise and turn up with clipboards and white coats to take a
look at it to make sure I don't end up with a heap of shit?

It's OK, but a bit non-descript and dull. As with all of the Audis from
that age the engine is pretty unburstable; 100k is nicely run-in, 200k+ is
quite possible. Electrics are more likely to be a problem, so it's vital to
check everything works, especially electric windows, which seem to be a
weakness and which can be gob-smackingly expensive to sort out.

If you can go for a quattro model, although you'll be looking at twice the
price, at least, of the same non-quattro model and go for a decent sized
engine. Make sure the gearbox doesn't make any strange noises, especially
in reverse and that the diff locks work.

Don't rule out the 100 either, even though it looks a bit more dated.
I'm happy to have a look at any that are just south of the border for you
.... I'll even check that they're not on fire, if you want.

Yes, yes, I did that joke, see ... "I'll even check that they're not on
    fire".

Of course as soon as I started looking I found this ...

I _could_ use a SOC, just for the school run, like.

Hmmm... can't really tell from the photos, but the body looks pretty
sound, engine bay looks... well, like an engine bay really, interior
looks OK, from what you can see.

With nearly 6 months MOT on it, you can't really go wrong for that
price. Wonder what it'll go for?

I'd almost be tempted. Do you think the dog would fit in the back?

I'm guessing it will go for somewhere in the 1000-1200 range and I very much
doubt the reserver will be set below 800.
Probably not in the boot, no. Well, that is, she'd fit, but I very much
doubt she'd be happy about it.

You could take out the back seats and put her there, I suppose.

Not really. If you turn it right up then the fuel consumption goes through
    the roof.

If you can find a good one, an Audi 90 20V sport is the way to go.

Dated? Dated!!! Hmmmph. My Audi 100 is just pushing 230K miles. And
it looks as fresh as the day it was minted.

And it passed its M.O.T today, too. :) :)

Well, when I say passed, it failed because the number plates had
developed those black smear lines. So it's now got a pair of shiny,
new, Gatso readable ones, and I've got an MOT
