No no no, you didn't do it right. If you put the water in a pitcher
that is not see-through then when they see the pitcher and look into it
    they see flat water.

Apparently it's the water that stands up (in a clear plastic bottle)
    that has the effect.

How on earth are we supposed to conduct an experiment using precise
tools if you change some of it, hmm?

I have just checked this on my two.

They wandered past it in a completely unconcerned manner. Completely
un-disconcerted, they were. One might almost say they were concerted.

Pop *that* in yer result set.

It was see through though. Only other thing I have is guinness bottles
and I know they won't work.
Okay, okay. I'll find a tall bottle and have them run another test.

  7. Right, this sounds like a daft enough experiment. Will do, and I'll

    Exactly what I thought.

    It doesn't work.

However, it does work when you pick up the bottle and throw it at said
    cat.

I haven't seen the little fucker since 9am.

My mum does this in her garden and swears by it. Sshe is even more
cynical than I am so I'd actually support this particular theory.

I would try it my garden but I think the dog would knock them over and
they might not work so well then.

So they are avoiding whatever it was that ate the fish out of the
    little cylindrical tank.

    Good point.

  12. When I was a nipper we had a tortoiseshell cat who used to sometimes
come back in with her head and shoulders soaking wet.

We couldn't work out why until the neighbour started complaining that
    all their goldfish kept disappearing..

Sounds like a load of bollocks to me. We tend to leave a litre bottle
of water next to the cats' bowl downstairs, and it's never bothered
them. Nor has it stopped the occasional food raids by neighbouring
    cats.

Talking about this in work, we decided it would probably be down to the
personality of the cat as to how effective it would be. IE, a cat that
is a bit shy and retiring wouldn't go near it, but a moggie wiv
attitude wouldn't be bothered by it.
    Was that your intention? <G>

A bit short of that in most places. Although oddly enough, I could get
hold of some as it happens.

I wonder how well it'd sell on Ebay?

  16. In uk.rec.motorcycles, SP amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
Try it out and see how well it works and then you can rave about its
merits. I saw it it on the really wild show, something about cats not
having the same boundaries as humans or something. Apparantly the only
thing cats don't like are bigger cats - Chris Packham told me so.

    Hmm. <scratches chin>

It just so happens I know the head keeper at Knowsley Safari Park..

The only thing is, you'd need to definately try it out first to make
sure that it was effective or the customers may not be too happy if
you've assured them that it will work.

It's supposed to be very effective and a lot of zoos and parks sell it.

I don't believe the 'vertical water' thang would freak a cat out, but a
wide, distorted reflection of their own face when they look in the
bottle might, especially a timid 'tat. IOW a manky old bottle with a
label might not work, but a clean shiny one might.

The thing that definitely does work is orange peel scattered around the
    garden.
