You're right. A prius is ideal for taxis. It obviously meets all of the
B & W Cabs everywhere are swinging over to Prius. Almost every B & W cab in
    Cairns are now Prius.

  5. Absolutely.

There a quite a few petrol cars out there, less than 2/3 the price, giving
    better fuel economy.

Prius = clever marketing to the gullible.

    Gullible = Loser Lu.

Most of the top 10 seem fairly reasonable choices to me, with the
possible exception of the Toyota Hilux 4x4, the Commodore and the Falcon
and even those are better than they used to be.

    As at April 09.

    Holden Commodore 4814
    Toyota Corolla 3903
    Ford Falcon 2708
    Mazda3 2693
    Toyota HiLux 4x4 2199
    Toyota Yaris 1924
    Hyundai Getz 1686
    Holden Astra 1615
    Toyota Camry 1551
    Subaru Forester 1534

A consistent 5.8l/100km in city driving no coasting and with AC on when
    needed.

I agree that NEW they are too much but 2nd hand after 2-3 yrs, they then
become an item to be considered.
And once again I will state for those that are a bit "thick"...the fuel
consumption tests dont factor in "at idle" stats..which many of us have to
endure in peak traffic or at traffic lights, unless you're a bogan living
outside the CBD. At standstill the Prius uses ZERO petrol...figure that out
if you can against an idling dinosaur Corolla etc...:)

bet it won't get that out on the highway though
The city is where the Prius is suited, running most of the time on the
    electric motor off the batteries

A a Corolla would better it on the highway
    and costs almost $20,000 less

Guess what dickhead, I recently bought a new Toyota which is about the
same price as a Prius so if I wanted a Prius I could have bought one,
there is nothing about a Prius that suits my needs so I would have to be
    a fool to buy one.
Even if a Prius did suit my needs I still wouldn't buy such an ugly car.

    Do they?

Assuming that they suffer the same depreciation as anything else they're
*still* a long way behind a three year old Corolla in terms of value for
money, and unlike a Corolla they're three years closer to an out of warranty
    battery replacement.
I recon a Corolla could idle for about a week on a litre of petrol :)

    Me either.

After driving the ones from the wife's department all I can say is that
you'd have to be a pretty serious window licker to *want* one :)

  16. Isn't this a bit desperate debating between a Prius or Corolla? Ye
gods. They are people movers. As long as they do the job safely then
who cares. If you were discussing Monaro vs a GT Ford I can see the
    point.

The Prius is where we are heading folks. Or something along that line.
It's first generation. I couldn't give a **** what it looked like. It
did what I needed around Melb CBD. Drove nicely. Used fuckall fuel.
And had plenty of off the mark grunt if I had to outrun someone who
wasn't paying attention. Got it's design specs pretty good for a first
generation vehicle I reckon. No - I didn't drive it on the highway and
doubt I'd want to. But we got to start somewhere.

It's not really an argument. It's a source of amusement for the people who
know better by the fuckwits who think the Prius is something special :)
Indeed we do, but hybrid cars are not the answer in my opinion. In fact,
they're not even close. They're nothing other than a ploy by a few
manufacturers to play on the paranoia of some in an attempt to lighten their
    wallets.

  18. And what about fuel consumption? And throw in some bikes while you're at it to
rub some salt into their wounds.

  19. I won't disagree there, but we have to start somewhere. From the 3
days I had it, it seemed like a good start. You can't magic up a brand
new technology and put it on the road. We're going to go through the
hybrids, then fuel cell or electrics if someone comes up with a great
    new technology in batteries.

But we have to start changing. It's a change. Hybrids will come down
in price and as more get on the road, the cost of the batteries will
come down. Look at mobile phone costs over the last decade. And a lot
of that has been driven by better technology from batteries.

The Prius was a damn fine thing to drive around inner Melbourne. I
hate automatics in general, but this did everything it was designed to
    very well.

As for price, we have to stop changing cars so often. Yes they get
safer and more efficient. But the energy cost just building them sort
wipes out most of the fuel efficeiency gains. I don't know there's an
    easy solution thre. It's a Catch 22.
