OK i knew I was sticking my neck out there? But where did I
    go wrong.
    At 1/8d a gallon you get 8 gallons for a 'd'.
    8x12 (12d in a schilling)=96
    96x10 (for 10 bob)=960
Ahh but thats for 10 bob not £1
So it should have been 1920 gallons for £1.
Anyway you get 'the general idea'.
Must have been a WWII supertank I guess.

I should have said it would be easier in gallons.
As we all know 8 gallons = one Troll

Where someone's reading it from, and where its relevant to, are two
different things. Since it was a discussion about what's legal and
illegal in the UK, anything to do with is pretty irrelevant.

Thats not true, and being rude brings a rude response, and I can
certaintly give as good as, if not better, than I get.
It may not be too well formatted but you will just have to use your
    imagination.

Oh, there are several. Racal for example.

And... the company doesn't have to be succesful long term
for people to do well out of it. Many people did well out
    of Marconi.

I've got friends who are still doing well out of them.
    (Software Engineers)

I know many, many, Engineers who would argue strongly with
this; including myself. Look at the IEE salary survey and
then look at the average salary in the UK (or the mode if
you can find figures for it). You'll see a major disparity.

Absolute rubbish! the mental maths bit is true but
Electronics Engineers being made redundant through
    calculators? No.

You won't? That's strange because I've seen several that
required Engineers to be highly numberate.

What sort of job are you thinking about? What are these
poor 'engineers' employed to do that require them to be
    customer facing?

Also you can hardly talk about badly formatted input when it was
not at all clear to whom your remarks where being directed.

You can give as good as you can get? Well I suggest you
start doing this because thus far you're not doing a very
    good job.

I'm more than happy to deal with your rude responses.

    Handbags at dawn?

Where had it said "in the UK"? Someone just said "your
local", my local could be anywhere.

Oh, it has to explicitly say so? My mistake. I was assuming that
anyone with an ounce of intelligence would assume what it related to
from the groups it was posted to. Still, there's no accounting for
    some, I suppose...

You do realise you're not even very good at this, don't you?

What actually matters is whether you win or lose, or what you
estimate you chances of winning or losing are better than the
quoted odds. (If you thing you are getting good value you should
    bet more).
If you look at the 'big bets' placed on some races you will find quite
a large percentage reflect the odds (ie 400 to win 900 (400@ 5/4)).
I am not too sure why this is, but punters probably like to free their
brains for the complex process of calculating which horse will probably
win the race, rather than having the distraction of estimating their
    winnings.

Well you do not appear to understand, my mind needs to be entirely
concentrated on getting the winner of the race, which may involve
100's of highly complex and subtle mental estimations. I really do not
want any distractions whatsoever, my only 'edge' is that I have made
better calculations than other punters. (I tend to do quite well usually).
    I did .60x12=7.20
    then took off the 12p=7.08.
I did give the correct answer 43.08.
    So you're willing to approximate
But it was so easy when it was in gallons, if it was £2.82
and it went to £2.90 you knew where you were.
When it went to 54.6p per litre (or whatever) it was not so clear.
    Actually I don't drive a car at moment ( I don't need to) I ride a
push (mountain bike), and I am pretty happy with it.
In traffic I am almost as quick as a car, (probably quicker) when you take
parking into account. I can ride right into the heart of the city centre,
or right to the front door of where I want to go to.
I also get some fresh? air and exercise, I dont have to wear/carry
a helmet and its particularly good in the summer. I dont have to worry
about it getting stolen either cos it only cost £100 (about two tank fulls
of petrol). Bascially its not worth stealing either.
It probably saves me 3 grand a year and I dont have to pay road tax
or worry about maintaince. (If I ever have a problem I will bin it
and buy a new (and probably cheaper one))

But thats just the point, you have to pay whatever the government
can squeeeze out of you, before you start squealing too much.
My only point was that we pay through the nose for petrol,
look at the new fuel protests planned.
no they were not, they 'evolved' they fit their purpose, you could
argue that metric measurement evolved, but they were imposed
by ( largely corrupt) goverments, mainly against the wishs of the people
    who use them.
(Basically it eased the introducion of the corrupt subsidies of the
Common Market, which force many Third World people to live
in poverty, whilst subsidising corrupt an inefficient European farmers
so they can have an easy life whilst we pay more for basic foodstuffs.)
The pattern is most of the measures fit the purpose for which they were
intended best. 16-14 may help to avoid confusion over ounces to stones,
I dont know. Why do we have 5 fingers? We evolve them, that was the
best compromise for thier function. Why not 4 or 6? The people with
4 or 6 fingers died out. The reason is complex but largely irrelevant.
    Its not far off
Presumably some Franks, Deutchmarks, Gilders, Pasetas, Lire etc as well.
Because its a pretty boring subject I am not too interested in anymore
    (if I ever was).
Most electronics has been 'done', and it has no more future
    than basket weaving.
You assume my motivations are purely personal ones.

I guess some of the motoring groups I posted to were not
    uk.

Prehaps some of the slightly abusive posts I have recieved have
resulted from confusion over nationalities, leading to misunderstanding
as to what I was talking about.
    Seems a fairly logical explaination.
Or prehaps I am really just an irritating twat (as I have always suspected).
    Where are u posting from?

However, there's nothing difficult about translating millimetres into
centimetres or metres, so it doesn't really matter, surely?
