    Potentially, a lot.

My salary (common knowledge within the railway industry) can be lower
than earnings in the order of £15K - 20K.

I'm a lazy **** so *my* salary, which doesn't include contractual
Sundays, is not too far off earnings (but this depends on your definition
    of far)

I'd better explain, in addition, previous post, just in case the
impression is I have mega 'on-the-side' earnings. (molten MZ's don't
keep the wolf from the door).

Drivers, despite managements pleas, are still paid by the hour with
Sunday working not included. So *anything* (other than strictly defined
areas) we do above the base 35 hour, 4-day week is paid as extras. This
leads to a fairly large disparity between salary and earnings.

Actual earnings for some are, IMO, obscene.

Tescogirls don't wear orange. No, it's a new height in pikeydom - a
Tesco Value T-shirt reduced from 3.99 to 99p (in 1 size too big)
because orange is obviously just too far away from fashion to sell at
any other price. Heh. I just like orange. I'm going to get Owen's lot
to paint my SR250 tank and panels in orange when its done up. (The
    rest is already hammerited black.)

I was wondering that too, you're not the only thick one here.
Most months I do similar amounts of overtime (about 10 hours) and I
tend to count that as part of my salary. I earn so little I'd be
    stuffed without it.

  5. You wanna get on the Underground then - 35 hour week, salaried and *no*
rest day working at any cost. I barely manage 3 hours overtime a month
    :-(

Oh and Sunday & bank holidays are part of our contracted hours.

I don't do overtime. This is a good thing.

    For three reasons,
    (1) It creates employment
    (2) Exaggerated earnings / salary differential is non pensionable and
    ultimately undermines salary
    (3) I'm a lazy bastard

No, I don't want to be on LU. I know a lot of the drivers.

So is it true that tube drivers earn ?40k? If you'd prefer not to
answer, I understand. I'll do anything to avoid an argument with Burnt
    too.

  8. But isn't this what the trade unions (Uncle Mick and Uncle Bob) wanted?
I thought they wanted the status of salaried workers, no overtime, 35
    hour week etc?

Either some people are never satisfied or are you saying your beloved
train union leaders didn't do what the membership wanted?

No, I meant to type that (in relation to institutionalised O/T). Unless
    I've been wooshed.

What's the point of a 35 hour week if you are contractually obliged
(Aslef V BRB in the case of contractual Sundays was lost in the '80s) to
do overtime. "Outside the working week" is a phrase bandied about, given
my obligation to Sundays my working week is seven days, not six. This
    should equate to 35 hours.

There is resistance to Sundays in the week in areas where they are not
included, but not, strangely, where they are. The perception is the
company will force us to work more Sundays and the opportunity to earn
extra will be curtailed. For reasons I will not bore you with neither
arguments are true in the case of the current pay, pension and rostering
    arrangements.

I meant to add, on SC Sundays are still outside the working week, SWT and
CSE they are included. As a negotiator, it's an argument we have still
    yet to win on SC.

Oh, I thought you meant to type "it creates unemployment" rather than
    creating employment.

I don't see how overtime creates employment to be honest.

You could have two people doing 60 hours a week, or three people doing
    40 hours a week.

On a macro-economic level, the latter is preferable.

"I DON'T do overtime, this is good",

If this is done collectively, it creates employment.

My crappy English at fault, methinks.

    Arrrrgggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

    exactly.

    OVERTIME CREATES UNEMPLOYMENT.

which was, kind of, my point.

  19. Lock ammunition magazine in to receiver. Load first round.
A guy at my local club brought in an original Sharps buffalo gun and a
Brown Bess last week. Beautiful engineering from such a long time ago.

    Mick Whittingham, Oct 22, 2003
  20. From what I remember hearing of the Brown Bess, at a hundred yards the
ball could be anywhere in a 3' radius. No wonder the Redcoats preferred
    volley fire.

The Sharps though... different barrel of frogs altogether.
