Petrol less than £1 a gallon!!!!!!

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by half_pint, Sep 29, 2003.

  1. When last in Oz petrol was about £1.30 an imperial gallon, and LPG was
about half that ( why do we STILL convert to gallons) ?
Mind, the South Ausrtralian state government's main source of
independent revenue is through catching speeding motorists, which they
    do with great gusto.....

I can't/wont go metric, even my home was built in feet n inches, how u buy
a fitted kitchen for an older home without having gaps or cutting up a
    cabinets carcase!!!

Would it not have been more udefull to quote pints , as we are talking
    gallons ?

    ME -

The US gallon is only 8 US pints, compared to the imperial gallon that is 8
    imperial pints.

[BTW- Its possible to get a 2-pint can of beer in canada, but thats less
    than a litre ]

Same way as for metric - nothing fits exactly in houses, especially not
houses like mine (right angle? What's one of those then?)

    cheers,

Maybe, but how many miles to the litre[1] does your bike do ?
    We still talk MPG.
[1] Yes I know, it is measured in litres/100km on the continent.

And you measure running costs in MPL or MPG ?
But every one still wants to know the price per gallon.

Nope, I measure in miles per tank and money per tank.

    Ie,

    in my Civic, 1 tank = 27 quid = 350 miles
    in my Vectra[1], 1 tank = 55 quid = 500 miles[2]

    [1] I know.
[2] This was extrapolated as I only ever put 20 quid in at a time.

An American pint is 16 fluid ounces and an Imperial one is 20 fluid ounces.

I reckon that this is a more realistic measure although it could be
argued that something like the four and a half pee it costs me to fuel
my bike for every mile it travels when ridden enthusiastically is better
    still.

......and *I* get there quicker than yo....

Indeed, we'll have to get it sorted soon, but I'm skint until
    Christmas.
Well, yeah, it would be a bit embarrassing to be seen with someone
whose car is the model above your own.

The yanks subsidise road transport quite a bit, fuel & car tax doesn't cover
    the cost of road maintenance.

Some areas have terrible quality roads (even by our standards ...) because
the local authority type things don't want to pay for them.

    Two words: Taxable benefit.

The Astra was the best performance and handling I could find for the
lowest real cost to me. (As in it's just under what my car allowance
provides, and isn't a huge tax burden.)

In hindsight I should have contributed the extra few quid a month and
got the golf TDI though, it'd have saved me loads in fuel bills.

    Yes, that's a great place!

Diesel was 5c US per US gallon. Same price as a beer at a beach bar.

I've had no idea how much a gallon is for at least 5 years. They
advertise the price in litres, and I put so many litres in the tank -
why do I need to know about gallons?

    2.2 SRi

I've done almost 40K in it, and so far no faults (it's just due it's
second service - yep 20k service intervals).

I tend to drive it lead footed and get about 280 miles to a £34 tank of
fuel.. It once did 370 miles on a tankful though so it can apparently be
    driven economically, which is dull.
