Now I know its you Connor- WTF?

Common sense for such a calculation is
    a) eeeh thats about right for a tank full of petrol
    b) Simplify the numbers and say "about 40 quid"
    c) calculator out.
    d) back of envelope+pencil

to multiply a 3 digit number with a 2 digit number is a bit of a party
piece, It would be a waste of time to teach people to do such a pointless
thing. There are many other more worthwhile things to do.

Much as it might be an exercise to clean the kitchen floor with a
toothbrush, or if you have a 3 mile trip - do it on foot, or if you have a
20 item shopping list to memorise it rather than write it down.
Hardly "oh dear..." if you chose the easier and more sensible answer.

Sorry but it riles me when people, especially on here, call me stupid
yet I can do the above with no problem and the very same people who
call me say they use a calculator.

Personally, I tend not to carry one around with me all the time but I
    suppose it takes all sorts.

I can recite pi to 10 decimal places. This does not make me intelligent, it
    makes me a sad git.
Mental arithmetic is useful, but not to the level you seem to think useful.
If you do not carry one at all times you are a bit of a luddite.

I'm glad I don't have to programme on punched cards, solder my own computer
together from bits or work in machine code any more.

I wouldn't mind the money (in today's prices) I used to earn doing that.

Are you saying someone might ask for 10 gallons?

I know a large number of people who do not have a mobile phone. Most retired
people, for a start, but also including many in their 30s and 40s.

No, they wouldn't ask for it in any measure of volume. So it's no more
difficult to account and budget for it in gallons than in litres. Also the
generally used fuel consumption measure in the UK is miles per gallon. If
you say a car does 28.4 mpg, it means something. Convert that to litres/100
km and for most people it's meaningless.

Bear in mind too that all UK spec cars record distance travelled in miles,
    not kilometres.

I don't have a mobile phone, nor do a lot of people of my acquaintance.

Plenty of people. Mobile phone ownership is not yet at 100%. I can
think right now of 6 people who don't have one and another one who only
    carries it occassionally.

Not true, the Luddites were objecting to tthe machines depriving them of
    work.
