NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. average retail gasoline prices fell sharply over
the last two weeks, reflecting the end of the peak summer driving season,
according to the Lundberg nationwide survey released on Sunday.

The national average for self-serve regular unleaded gasoline fell to
$1.6179 a gallon in the survey taken Sept. 26, a drop of 10.26 cents from
    the prior survey.

Nothing to do with uk.legal, but don't it just make you sick that the yanks
    are paying
    less than £1 a gallon (exchange rate £1= $1.66).
I have heard yanks weep in chat rooms when the price approached $2, which is
    an
    extortionate £1.25 a gallon.
However, the suggestion that the war in Iraq is about oil seems a bit thin
    when the yanks
are paying about a quarter of the price we pay. Either the yanks are
    exceptionally greedy
(a fair assumption), or we are a nation of sheep (ditto).
Asssuming you pay 33% income tax and petrol tax is 80% ish and after road
    tax etc
we probably drive 1 mile and pay 9 miles in tax so about 90% + of your
    income is
going in tax, which puts you in the millionaires tax bracket ( who probably
    actually pay
about 5% tax when all the tax breaks and dodges are taken into account).
    Pass the sickbag.
For the yanks to go to war over oil maybe understandable, but for the
    British to do the
    same seems rarther stupid.

Just to make you feel a tiny bit better - the US gallon is puny about 3.85l
compared to imperial gallon of 4.564l.

  5. But most Yanks drive around in enourmous V8-engined SUVs, and get about
10mpg. On the other hand Europeans drive in mid sized diesel engined cars
and get about 50mpg. Yanks may make up 5% of the worlds population but they
    produce 25% of the CO2.

Bear in mind, most american cars do <25mpg average. Also US gallons are
smaller than UK ones, and two years ago it was unfder $1 per gallon, so it's
doubled in two years. Two years ago our prices were about 65p/l, at least
    it's not 130/l now...
    They aren't taxed the same.

There's no suprer tax bracket. Millionaires pay 40% on the top portion of
their earnings, same as anyone earning over 35k ish.

Agent 2.0 [1] is supposed to be able to do that, and is supposed to be
out before the end of the year.

It'll also run on Unix and Mac, apparently, but I remain to be
convinced of the value of such a cross-platform strategy, having seen
other products that have tried a similar idea in the past.

point taken but 10mpg to 50mpg is a bit out

more like 15 - 30 , normal driving remember not 55mph on the motorway

one thing , they do drive longer distances as the place is so big

during the war , there was a news man filling up a SUV in iraq
full tank - think it only cost a $1 or similar

i'm sure its not worth charging for it when its so cheap - too much admin !

easier to give it away free !

    i wish . . .

Download the latest Netscape. It handles mail in the same way as Moz
(and you can import all of your mail/news too) but with added features
and the spam traps are much better these days (better than anything else
    I've played with for Linux).

    HTH!

In the UK we produce more oil than we use in the US it's very much the other
way round. We went to war not for oil for our selves but because Tony doesn't
want to risk upsetting the special UK-US relationship but doesn't give a hoot
    about the UK-EU relationship.

Would it not be more useful to quote litres as that is how petrol is
    priced?

£x.xx per gallon is utterly meaningless when it's sold as £0.xx per
    litre[1].

[1] Yes, I can't be arsed to convert it. We use metric now.

Oh thats alright then, we should be paying £50 a gallon, we have had it to
cheap for to long, I must write to my MP immediately. Is there a charitable
    fund
which gives free petrol to the yanks which I can donate to?
There is a supertax bracket but its reserved for smokers, drinkers and
    motorists
and people who use public transport, those millionaires will be spending a
    far smaller
proportion of their earnings in tax. By the time their accountantss have
    finished they probably
    pay 10% tax overall.
