I'm about to buy a personal reg of somebody that has it 'on retention'.

What's the proceedure? Is it just a piece of paper similar to a V5 that he
signs to say I'm now the owner?

You need the JustABitSad form from the post office. I think you also have to
sign away your personal good taste allowance as well.

I know someone who used to own 'THE 911' on a lovely old example of the
    correct car.

ok ..all from memory so may not be 100% but certainly 95%

If it's on retention then he has a certificate of asignee (or similar)
in his name. You pay him the monies, he changes the asignee on the
certificate to you (must be sent back to dvla) , new cert sent to you
    at your address.

Note it must be done this way cos the vehicle to which you asign the
reg must be in the name of the asignee. Also you will need to pay the
asignement fee etc when asigning to the vehicle.

Note if the donor reg number is to be retained then this is yet
another cost and procedure. If you dont retain it, then when you come
to change and take the personal one off it may not be given the same
reg! (they will try but cannot guarantee it). This depends on wether
the donor reg is one you want to be able to re-asign to the vehicle.

Not sure if you know all about personal reg's but there are lots of
other rules about assigning to vehicles.

Most notable is if it's coming from vehicle A to vehicle B then both
vehicle A and B have to be taxed/moted and insured!!

Also make sure you insurance company know it's a personal reg and in a
write-off situ that the reg is to be returned to you.

Check the dvla personal reg site for other rules etc.

Well, he sold the plate seperately to the car and (I think) got more for
the plate.. cetainly many more times what it cost.
