Didn't Dr Atkins die a couple of years back weighing in at 18 stone?

Last April, and whether he was overweight or not is in dispute.
It seems that Atkins (the company) are claiming that he put
on 27kg[1] while he was in a coma[2]:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/3483143.stm

[1] Reports are that he was 116kg when he died are being denied
and the co. claim that he was 89kg at the time of the accident.
[2] Do they pump you full of carbs when you're in a coma, then?

  9. As I have something of a vested interest in this, would you mind
un-confusing me? AFAIK I've been told to cut the carbs, lay off the
processed sugar altogether and reduce the fat content, which all seems
to make sense, although it's fucking awful from a taste POV. Who's
    wrong?

    [atkins diet]
which after being tested and scanned and having gallons of blood
extracted is where the doctors have got to with me. Mr Corfield - you
are a fat bastard, if you do not lose weight you will continue to feel
like shit because your liver cannot cope and your back hurts because it
is trying to support so much gut out the front.

To stop being a fat bastard we will not be offering any help - please do
more exercise and eat the right food. And we do not recommend any
faddish diet at all. Love and kisses the NHS.

You start of by paying the local Head of Endocrinology to be treated as a
private patient (1). That way you don't get the standard NHS line to which
he is somewhat tied for the herd.
You have been told to cut carbs (2), so that seems fine? keep the fat down
a bit, so that seems fine? laying off processed sugars is a bit of a no
    brainer. Where is the confusion.

    You have read
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos...14735/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_0_1/026-2678443-4304453
    or similar?

I'm eating meat products from a good butcher which has the fat content well
trimmed, plenty of veg (particularly green), fair bit of dairy and nuts, I
keep the fruit and bread type stuff to a complete minimum. I drink as much
booze as I like, have a few biscuits and occasional choccie. I am enjoying
the diet, don't really need to think much about what/how much I'm eating now
    and eat out regularly.
BG average is 7.1 this month. Cholesterol is almost under control and weight
    down 6kg.

    (1) buttons, only £70 every couple of months.
    (2) much better advice than normally handed out

For sure *any* form of eating will make/keep you fat if you cram in vast
amounts of calories. Do you think that your food intake is actually vast?

  18. Not on my wages, and if you think I'm paying for Porl to make more
    bloody rabbit animations...
Your criticism of the "standard advice" - it seems I've been getting
better info. Also, gf's aunt is a retired GP, herself
    insulin-dependent, and an absolute oracle.
No, but I think I might.
I'm not eating particularly well, TBH. Oven chips and convenience
foods too often - I can't stand greens at all. Grilled burgers, fish
portions (Birds Eye et al) and the like, although some better quality
meat (lean steak, lamb chops, pork escalopes, lots of chicken); some
bread (mostly wholemeal) and the occasional apple. Average BG is
about 6. Cholesterol has slipped, needs bringing back under control
and weight has gone up a little - part of this may be due to the
complete abandoning of my (minimal but somehow satisfactory) exercise
regime, round about the time a myopic Renault driver completely failed
to see me last August. Thorntons make an excellent diabetic dark
chocolate - they make a milk one too, but that obviously contains
lactose. The (very) occasional square of CDM etc., however, does no
    harm.

  19. It's quite simple really and I've said this to a previous doctor who
assumed I ate 3 fried breakfasts every day, 12 MacDonalds a week and 75
pints of beer a week. I do none of those things.

My food intake is fairly modest but I have a sweet tooth. I very rarely
drink alcohol - last time was 2½ weeks ago when flying back from Hong
Kong. I have a sedentary job and don't really exercise. I have cut out
eating biscuits completely, I may have 1 chocolate bar a week. I am
trying to boost my fruit and veg intake up to the 5 a day
    recommendation.

Looking back I started to pile the weight from having bought a motorbike
    - I used to pedal cycle and mountain bike quite a lot. I have a more
stressful job than before which makes me feel too tired to contemplate
exercise and more money made me more self indulgent as to what food I
bought. Also not being very happy overall results in "eating for
pleasure". As you can see I am quite good at self diagnosis - I'm trying
to take small sustainable steps which will help get me a bit lighter and
a bit fitter. I can then hopefully move on from there to further
improvement. There is no point in me trying to make some big gesture or
change - I know I won't sustain it hence the alternative approach.

Yep - everyone's metabolism is different. It really annoys me that
people think I must be a greedy bastard. I actually eat very little
and usually quite sensibly - but I like chocolate and I drink too much
    (mainly wine and spirits).
That was my tack when I found jeans getting a bit tight lately. It's
easy to cut down the chocolate to the occasional treat level, but it's
hard to get the fruit and veg up to 5 a day - for me, anyway. It
worked; the jeans are now loose again. I'm still a fat bastard, mind.
I lost a lot of weight when I was unhappy as I (these days) don't do
comfort eating. (I used to.) Also, I now have an active job after
years of sitting all day. This is a Good Thing. I also have less money
than I used to have but this doesn't alter my eating patterns. In the
bad old days I wighed in at about 14 stone; I'm now about 12.
Ding a ding ding! It sounds as though we are road buddies, good luck
    mate.
