While I was playing on TOGs Triumph yesterday, he was ridning the Peg.

He recorded a top speed of 106mph. (Naughty boy).
    Previous was 100mph.

I was impressed and on the way home had a go, but I got heavy wobbles past
95 (I had removed panniers etc when TOG was playing), and maxed at 101.

Later in the evening I went for a thrash with no excess gear/panniers. Max
    I could get was 104.

Just checked bike specs online, max is 101......

I can only assume TOG managed the 106 while on the down hill chunk of the
    M25 J8/7.

Looks like that top speed setting will be around for a while then :-(

(unless I press the reset button)

Heh, I'm keeping my top speed to myself.

Though don't forget that there's proabaly 10% error on the speedo - so a
real top speed of 101 will probably equate to about 110 or so on the speedo.

So you need to try harder.

On the Zed, when I had 145 on the speedo the GPS recorded a far more
    believable 125.

  5. Actually, it was on the uphill bit of the M23, after the M25, believe it
    or not.

I have none of these electronic read-outs on my machine,
there's no incriminating evidence around to embarrass me.

Granted, but it has been pretty spot on going past those nice speed test
monitors they set up around the country :)
I've found digi speedos more accurate, but plan to test with GPS (all
bikes). Last night at 40 the XJR showed as 35 on a speed test sign.

Is that why the two of you were grinning like idiots and gibbering
like fools when you got back?

I kept watching for the "prillia in the mirror all the way home but no
    sign.

    That's normal :)
Took a while to get packed and off, then stuck at 85->90 most of the way
    back.
