Pedestrian railings are stronger than I thought.

Yesterday morning I saw a Honda HRV which had somehow managed to drive
into the pedestrian safety railings outside Charing Cross hospital. It
had hit the railings edge on and the impact had spun the car 90 degrees
and nearly ripped the drivers side wheel off. What the dick was doing
driving at speed on the wrong side of the road is another question.

  2. How do you know he was?

Because he'd hit the railings on the right hand side of the road
travelling the same way I was going. I can tell which direction he was
going by the way railings are bent and because the drivers side of the
car was damaged. The position of the car was suggestive of that too, it
was facing the right hand kerb after it had pivoted round the right
hand front wheel which he'd buried in the railings almost head on I'd
guess. The damage to the car was pretty severe so I don't imagine he
    was going slowly.

I was so busy rubber necking that I nearly ran into the back of van
that stopped in front of me.

I should have used my fancy new mobile to take a picture. All would
have been clear. Or at least you could formed your own conclusion.

  4. I was considering the likelihood that he was on the right side of the
road and that something made him swerve suddenly, to cross into the
    oncoming lane.

Rather more likely, IMHO. Driving on the wrong side of the road isn't
something you can do or very long before you hit something coming the
    other way.

Or he could have been overtaking, met oncoming traffic and tried the
    pavement as an escape route.
