    Dead BIOS battery, I'd say.

Yep, look for something like a watch battery on the motherboard.

<scratches head> It works dunnit? I've been in this situation a
couple of times and I put it down to the chicken. I'd probably
replace the battery anyway if it's more than 5 years old, it's only a
    couple of quid.

I think it could have been a coincidence as normally even missing RAM
wouldn't stop it powering up in which case we may be looking closer at
the PSU. Do you have an old PC/Case or even a seldom used PC you could
    borrow one from?
Could be, or not. One way to be sure that it's not (as least) the
battery is to measure it. You should be able to do so in situ if you
have good access, if not pop it out and do so (as you are practiced
at resetting the BIOS values in any case). ;-)

It might not stop it powering up but it will certainly stop it booting.
If Champ hasnt connected the internal speaker then you wont hear the
    beep codes to tell you.
Just replace it, they are pennies.

Indeed, but I believe Champ did say it wasn't (even) powering up.
True but he did mention the completion of the POST so knew when it was
    somehow.
Again, true but not always at hand or available in every corner shop.
If he takes it out, measures it and finds it fine, there's little
point going out to look for a new one (especially as they are often no
effort to remove and replace). ;-)

uh huh. Well, it's all fine now, and I ran MemTest86 on it last
    night, with no reported problems.

A replacement machine is at the planning stage. If Brownz ever
    answers my email :)

If you weren't always faffing around, trying to build your boxes for
peanuts and spent a decent wedge on them in the first place.
You'd not always, seemingly, be having to bleat on about your kit
    failing, all the time. ;-)

    *ding*

That's exactly the logic that sorted me out with a nice fast quad core
machine with 8GB of RAM and 2TB of Disk. And it was worth every
    penny.

Yebbut - that was exactly the logic that won me my current machine from
AlanC, away from Champ, who had his nose in the trough from minute 1.
And now Champ's PC is fucked, mine is going great guns, I'm learning
Vista and Gravity and he's looking at BSODs all day.

    Guilt, man. Better than sex.
