  2. Neither of which work. I have followed the two lines of "attack"
suggested by the support person and the router will not proceed beyond
the log in stage. It is clear that the router is alive and well - the
netbook can detect it without difficulty. There is just no connection
despite having entered what I believe are the correct set up details
and asking the system to automatically detect the IP addresses via the
appropriate part of Control Panel. Back to the support people <sigh>

By no connection, you mean you can connect to the router, but the
router can't connect to the internet?

ISPs often whitelist modems by their MAC address. The MAC address
being a unique address for a piece of network hardware. In this case
you may need to get in touch with your ISP and get them to change the
MAC address that's registered at their end. You can sometimes do this
on their website. The MAC address for the router is likely to be
    printed on it somewhere.

Still? I knew it had been common in the early days, hence at least
    some devices supporting address spoofing.

Virgin certainly still do. I've just had to replace my Virgin issued
Super Hub (due to the PSU making a whining noise), and I had to ring
them up to register the MAC address for the hub so that it could
connect. It's even in their install documentation and I tried getting
the modem to connect with doing so. All I got on the status page was
    "Connection denied".

I had Virgin ADSL for a few years. I junked their frog modem for an SMC
ADSL modem which did not need the MAC address to be registered. It did need
a user id & password entered into memory though. Are you on cable, maybe?
