Pavement Parking

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by nehpetsthegrey, Jul 7, 2004.

  1. Ok, so this subject has probably been done to death, but what are the
rules for parking on the pavement. I have just picket up a ticket for
a nifty for parking on the pavement, curtesy of Westminster council.
I parked there in the niave belief that it was a sensible thing to do
from all views, ( ok I know) . Do I have a chance of getting away with
    it ????

No harm in trying. Email them and think of an excuse. If you have to pay,
    pay.

I think you might have answered your own question there. Westminster
are renowned, gave me a ticket a few years back when I was parked on the
white line bordering the bike park.

Mind you, Camden aren't much better, but at least they've declared an
amnesty on the piece of pavement I park on - and no, I'm not telling you
    where! :)

The fact is there just isn't enough designated bike parking in London to
go around. In the last two months, two bike parks near mine have closed
due to building works, so we are now limited to this one area on the
pavement. At 8.30am I'm generally getting the last spot beside the dead
    pigeon [1].

You can of course appeal, but if you lose won't you be stung for the
full amount? If it were me, I would just pay the reduced fee and not
park there again. But at the end of the days it's your money and your
    choice.

This is probably not much help to you, but I've had a nice litte rant so
    am happy :)

[1] Always makes me laugh that roughty toughty bikers won't park next to
    a rotting pigeon! :)

as a follow on question, does anyone know if there is any limitation about where on the bike they can stick the ticket?
i.e only to the windscreen or headlight?

Hah, that's nothing. We got a ticket on the cage the other week for
parking in a perfectly legal space, but _the wrong way round_. Yes,
    really.

I think they usually mange to get all of the ticket to display on the
    screen. Unlike your post, unfortunately.

Just in case I ever find myself driving through Switzerland, what's the
wrong way around to park? I mean is there a general rule of is it at
the whim of the car park at hand?

I parked in-a-legal-space-but-wrong-way-round in Brussels. As I was
walking away, a friendly local warned me that I'd get a fine if the
authorities saw my car in that position.

    (Does that mean I'm Belgian?)

  15. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
Westminster are total cunts; they stuck a ticket on mine when I had the
rear wheel out of the m/c bay.

This was on the street, where you (apparently) must park in the
    direction of traffic flow.

Some off-street parking does also have rules thoug, but they'll
generally have signs up. The one that pisses me off is where you're
next to the road, but perpendicular to it, and the signs tell you you
must park with 'Auspuff gegen der Strasse' (exhaust outwards). I hate
parking that way, as it means I have to reverse out into the street,
    but when in Rome...

I did this at Southgate house in Stevenage. IIRC there's some obscure
by-law about the pavement being part of the building within the shadow
it cast at 12 noon mid summer. It's enough to park a bike though.
