Watched the head of some sort of NSW safety committee on the Willesee show
last night. The feeling I got was that he was a fool and like any typical
politician full of shit. Prime example was when someone asked about not
allowing P platers to drive powerful cars much like they do with motorbikes.
Gibson implied that allowing only 250cc bikes was not the solution as some
250cc bikes are just as quick as bigger bikes. Maybe someone should let him
know the facts and generally I got the impression that he didn't like
    bikes.

And his major solution to the road toll in speed limits controlled by
satellites .Reckons it will only cost $200 to put the speed limit
controllers in cars. Apparently this system is been tested overseas ( Sweden
I think ) . Imagine having a limiter come on in your bike when you go over
100klm in a 100klm zone ? Reckons then you wont need cops on the road .....

I reckon if it ever happened the fastest growth industry in NSW would be
    "car/ bike chip mods " :)

It happens in trucks now with limiters. But they can be got round
    easily.

Workin for Chemtrans out of Miller Road, Isuzu I drove once flyin up
to 100k's and had 3 gears to go headin down to Goulburn, the limiter
hit and I nearly went thru the screen...

    "Will S
Won't happen. If they speed controlled all the vehicles, the road toll would
have to drop significantly, and they know it won't... (and of course the
foil from a cigarette packet is enough to shield the antenna from satellite
    reception).

    Great STuff! Bring it onnn!

Looks like the late night Harbour tunnel runs will be on again :) Hard to get a satellite down there.

  5. But he IS right - there are plenty of 250cc bikes that ARE as quick as
    the bigger bikes.

That's why power/weight ratios have come into play for learner bikes in
    some Australian States.

  6. Good onya Peter, I was just about to say the same thing.

Maybe Will S has not had the pleasure of riding an RGV250 or the like.

They are a rocketship and bloody dangerous in the wrong inexperienced
    hands.

  7. Including, as it turns out, NSW, where this safety committe guy
allegedly comes from. The 6 "fast"250 2 strokes have been banned for
learners here for years - the 4 cylinder 4 stroke 250s had been the
"fastest learner legal bikes" here up until (I think) late last year
when the Learner Approved Motorcycles approved a list of higher capacity
bikes for learners/p-platers and included a few interesting new options
for learned wanting the fastest legal machines - RVF400s, SZR600s and
some of the large capacity dirt bikes/supermotards spring to mind...

The learner legal bikes in NSW though are nothing like as quick as even
a 10 year old 600cc sportsbike (no matter what the fanatic baby blade
pilots tell you) - yeah, there _are_ guys who can run 1:50s round the
creek on a babyblade, but those guy will probably run 1:40s on a 5 year
old R6... Same as there's guys who can only run 2:10s on their R1s (Oh
my god, Honda Spadas are learner legal *AND THEY'RE FASTER THAN AN
    R1!!!*...)

Having said that, you can always pull an example of a "big bike" out
thats slower than almost _any_ learner bike (the girlfriends GR650
    springs to mind here...)

The guy may not deserve being though of as "a fool" and "full of shit",
but he clearly decided to make inaccurate comments to the media on
things he didn't know much about. The NSW rules are not about "allowing
only 250cc bikes", the rules _do_ take power to weight ratios into
account, the rulemakers _do_ know about exceptionally fast 250s and have
disallowed them specifically for many years.

...and at the end of the day, its not ultimate top speed which gets
inexperienced riders into trouble on powerful motorcycles, its the rate of
acceleration. A ZZ-R250 will do 150-160kph, but accelerating up to and
travelling at that speed is hardly going to get the average rider into
trouble... put that rider onto a litre sportsbike which is capable of that
with a twist of the wrist and no gear changes on the other hand...

But he didnt know that those 250cc bikes are not available for L platers or
    P Platers.
And once again he didnt appear to know this.
