Went over to see my dad this evening, and sitting on the drive is a nigh on
    mint 1979 XS750.

28k on the clocks, and the condition didn't seem to suggest it had done
    otherwise.

He paid... £800, which I reckon for something in that condition wasn't
    really a bad result.

    Sounded nice, too. :)

The silly old sod is still muttering about getting an old Brit bike as well
    though.

    *sigh*

Said it rides spot on, gears all feel nice etc.

Very nice nick, anyway... got to be better than some old oil pissing BSA.

  4. Nice bikes *if* you get a later one with the stronger gearbox. 1979 is
    about right.

Very trquey and handle quite nicely, but Christ! They're heavy.

Oh, and don't forget the middle gearbox when it comes to oil change
time. That's another weak spot. On mine, I went to change the oil in it,
and a few gear teeth dropped into the draining bowl. I buttoned it up
    sharpish and sold it.....

Hmm your a dodgy fucker and no mistake. The XS is now having it's valve
seats recut and ground and new inlet valves dropped in.

IIRC it was second gear that gave problems? the 850 had it fixed but
developed ignition pickup problems in place. Gawd this is all a long
time ago. So have you seen www.yamaha-triples.org yet?

What on earth was wrong with the old ones, or is this just a "might as
    well while it's apart" thing?
Second gear failed, yes. Asdid the primary drive chain. The middle
    gearbox was another Achilles heel.

    Looking now.

The valves or seats? The inlet valves had been battered by the over
loose tappets and the seats just looked as if they needed recut as well
    as lapped.

  8. The 'F' model onwards afair. The 850 was the 'G'. I had the 'F' and it
gave me no problems at all. Only thing I found was it became an utter
**** to start from cold as the exhaust baffles rotted out.
You get used to it. First big heavy bike I had to pick up from a U-turn
drop; there's a knack to it.
