Parts Fiches: Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha

  1. Note the link has now been quoted twice and is thoroughly fucked, here at
least, although it was fine the first time around.

So, Mr. Clever-clogs Blaney, does your magical news client still allow you
to click on it? Suppose you'd not seen the original message?
WTF for? apart from sheer bloody-mindedness, of course. Mind, some
corporate places don't allow news on the premises anyway...

Are you so clueless that you can't look at his headers and see the
    newsreader he's using?

    It's in my headers.
It's just ebay URLs that I would rather weren't posted. Because every
fucking newsgroup I read is being taken over by threads that start
with an ebay URL and nothing else.

Because they don't like their staff surfing for porn, and the URL may
masquerade a porn site. Thus, it gets blocked.

Standard policy in a lot of larger companies.

It may take a millisecond longer, but it's hardly tedious. 'Earl' just
sounds soooo wrong. Fair makes me cringe it does. A quick google shows
1.6 million hits for "an url" & 15.7 million for "a url", so it seems
you're very much in the minority.

  8. Like you can do that with an ebay item number.

  9. WTF is wrong with being a bit considerate and helpful, then?

If I think something on ebay is of interest, I can copy and paste the
number, or with a minimal additional amount of effort, copy and paste a
link, thereby saving the person the other end time and effort. Seems to me
that it's more effort for me to launch a browser, go to ebay's site, and cut
an paste the number into the search box then it is for me to paste a link in
    the first place.

I happen to think that's worthwhile - personally, it's easier for me if
others do so, so I do it myself.

Now, if you're complaining about an excess of ebay items being posted in
groups, you may have a point. But it makes ****-all difference to that
whether people post a link or an item number.

    ....

And as to the matter of which newsreader, is it so much fucking effort to
type "Agent 3", FFS? I only asked.

As it happens, I use the same myself, and it doesn't always result in
clickable links - the other day, I had one with brakcets in which broke, and
another with spaces. Not all URLs are equal, disregarding the length of
'em. In either case, had there been a tinyurl as well, I could have clicked
    on that instead.

  10. fair enough I spose, although people will find a way to do that anyway.

But the "competent news client" comment is equally valid to that case - many
corporate environments don't let users pick and choose software nor do they
let users install their own software - mostly for very good reasons.

It's unlikey that anything that's not worksafe will be offered for
auction on eBay. Imo the posting of just the item number is a good
    thing.

Nothing. Chipping the extraneous shite out of a ural is helping imho,
    aesthetically if nothing else.

I try not to think about it. Getting enough thinking effort going to
support the hand eye co-ordination needed for me to move my hand from
the space bar to the mouse means I have to drop any serious effort at
conscious control, concentrating is only going to complicate matters.

    So do I.

I wasn't complaining about anything. Honest.

That's more keystrokes than it takes you to hit "H" when reading one
of my posts and use your own fucking eyes.
You will find that the trouble is links posted by cunts with inferior
    newsreaders.

    I rest my case.

I think you're wrong. I think the problem is more likely to be in the
use of the newsreader than the newsreader itself.

Yep, but as long as they do it at home...
Well, there's that, but a lot of companies (my current employer
excepted) at least let you access something like google groups.

  16. actually, no, it's people making URLs with unlikely characters liek brackets
in. And they're cunts, too, right enough.

and why? Why post just the item number? who does that benefit?

    I can't stand it.

When I'm reading usenet I make a judgement as to whether I might be
interested in a URL by the domain name. I can't do that with tinyurl,
    and it pisses me off.

I'm with Ben on this one.

  19. makeashoterlink puts the URL up briefly before redirecting you.

In the shed, we tend to have tinyurl links with a brief comment about what
    it is, for silly URLs.
