BGN says... Sounds like a cracking deal, I'd buy it if that's the kind of thing you need. It's worth bearing in mind that humpback luggage doesn't have the capacity of the Oxford Sports or 1st time ranges. 70 quid usually only buys you an Oxford Sports tankbag. Apart from the aforementioned capacity differences, there's nothing wrong with the 1st Time gear, I used it myself for a few years before laying my mitts on a full set of lifetime guaranteed Sports stuff. The materials used aren't as robust as the Humpback or Sports ranges, but it's tough enough to withstand my throwing it around on countless weekends away. Elly has a modified[1] 1st Time tailpack that she's lugged around college filled with books for a year or so and it's never split a seam, it's my old one that I had for a few years IIRC. I sold a hell of a lot of Oxford luggage when I worked at Gericke, and I only had 2 or 3 items returned. Oxford didn't quibble, they just replaced it FOC without even seeing it. [1] Modified to make it a clip on arrangement with custom fittings for it on the rack. Now all you do is pull the flaps over the sides of the rack and clip them onto two pegs that stick out, and then secure both flaps with two R-clips that are on bowden cables attached to the rack. No more tedious bungees to put up with.
The Older Gentleman says... Can't see why anyone should have a problem with a correctly secured tailpack.
I had a look in Alford Bros. today and grabbed the Tailpack & Panniers as I already have a (Cargo) tank bag, they look simple enough to use secure. They come with copious amounts of Bungees. I'm fed up of throwing my tank bag on and off the ER-5, I've really screwed up the previously unblemished tank with it. I'm going to leave the soft panniers in situ 24/7 (that's the plan anyway) and transport the few things I take to/from work in those in the future. I'll only use the tank bag and/or tail pack when I'm going to going away for a few days. It doesn't look like the most pretty stuff on the market, but as I'm only going to be using it a few times a year I don't care what it looks like. As long as it works. And from various reviews, especially yours, it looks like it'll do me for a while yet.
