Aren't you the logistics bod? What is a good affordable way to get
stuff shipped to San Diego? Doesn't have to be there terribly fast.
Obviously open questions to everybody else who knows.

Well, potentially stuff like boxes of books, papers, pictures, bike
gear, cloths, assorted kitchen stuff (nothing breakable though), maybe
a pushbike. Total value probably not exceeding a few grand but all
used. I'm wondering if it would be useful/sensible to take my bike
over, as I won't really get a lot for it in Germany, and it would
provide me a with some means of transport over there. Will have to find
out how long I could ride on German plates over there.

No, may be even ideal, cause I could send it off while still here and
have time there to find a place to live before it arrives.

  5. From the California DMV website...

"Nonresident vehicle owners who move to California must register their
out-of-state vehicles in California within 20 days of the date they accept
employment or establish residency in California. If a resident of
California aquires a vehicle from another state or country, fees become due
the date the vehicle enters California and must be paid within 20 days to
    avoid late penalties."

Yup, sunny California here I come. Though I think I mentioned it once
    or twice here.

Thanks or the initial info. I haven't made my mind up entirely about
the scale of my move. It will depend to a large degree on the kind of
place I get there. So expect to hear from me again later this summer.

Well, that is the official version, but how would they necessarily know?
I think I've heard about someone who rode his bike in the UK for quite
a number of years on German plates, although legally he was required to
change over as well at some point. Maybe I have a poke at r.m. to see
if anybody there has heard of similar cases.

Probably chance or luck, however you want to look at it. There is a link
on the CHP website for the quislings to turn in their 'out of state'
neighbors who haven't registered. Bammy was fined 300USD for not
registering her cage when she moved here from Wisconsin (we waited 4 or
    5 months).

You might want to take a look at emissions regs, too, as your (Euro)
bike may not pass muster. A lot don't.

Ta, didn't think of that. Although I have to admit being surprised that
the US would have tighter emission regs then Germany.

I think the ME has the same regs as Europe, and when septics buy
motors here, they can't take them home.

That's kind of what I've heard. I pretty much abandoned the idea of
taking my bike across and will look for a nice one there and then.

Absolutely no idea what to go for. Really like the 1150GS [1], and they
seem to be quite affordable out there, but think I should keep my
options open and have a look around.

[1] no surprise there as the prodigal boxhead bike

Very tempting, but I doubt many reasonably priced used ones are going
    to be around.

Who knows, maybe I try my luck at ditch surfing there.

Here, you can beat yourself over the head with that for a little while.
