Will be in Leeds on Friday on way to Scotland. Planning to look at
Royal Armouries in daytime prior to getting pissed with a master of
    the art in the evening.

Has anyone been? Best gallery to look at? Other things in Leeds that
would be worth a look? Depending what time we get there will only have
a few hours - torn between the weapons and the Henry Moore Institute.

    Friday? Drat.
Ummm... no. But I've only been here for just over 5 weeks.
Don't know - haven't looked at any of them yet.
    Ummm... Tetley Brewery?
Ah, the Henry Moore Institute. I fancy having a look round there,
especially as it's just across the road from my hotel, but they usually
    shut before I finish work.

Let me know which you choose and what it's like, eh?

Oh, and if you find out what the watery noises emenating from the City
Art Gallery (next door to HMI) are all about, let me know - they're a
tad distracting when you're trying to sit in the sun and eat your lunch.

  3. If you've got a genuine interest in the contents of the Royal Armouries, as
opposed to just being dragged there, be aware it's the sort of place that
really needs a full day to look around properly.

Still, I suppose a couple of hours will get you a look at some sharp stabby
things and some loud bangy things, so it's all good.

That used to be a good Friday night out in Manchester, stabby things and
    bangy things.

Yes. Old stabby and hitty things rather than bangy things. The bank
holiday weekend I'll be htting people with the latex versions. Or just
    pointing my finger and mumbling.
I'm doing the dragging - though I think the carrot of the Oriental
    gallery is working its magic.
This is what I thought - I think 2 out of 5 gallerys should be
    possible though.
Oh yes. What's the Hunting gallery like?

Worst pint I've ever had. I've hated Tetley for years and some time
back a friend promised that you could get a decent pint of Tetleys and
Leeds was the place to go. Quite a few of us got together and
universally agreed that it tasted as though there was washing up
liquid in it. Friend was mortified, claimed it was a one off.
    Looks like the Armouries.
    Will do.
ooo sounds interesting, this was third on list, may have to do a quick
    recee and find out.

Right - I'll make sure to avoid any trips there. Somebody's bound to
    organise one at some point.
I'd fancy that, and it's walking distance from the centre, but they shut
at 5 o'clock, which is *way* earlier than I finish work.
"You will find traditional prints, watercolours, paintings and
sculptures as well as contemporary works made with plastic grapes and
    twintubs."

    Ah-huh.

  9. I found it a bit meh tbh, preferred the old stabby things and new bangy
    things.

There was a bloody *huge* gun on a boat though. Apparently used for taking
    out ducks...by the hundred.

Yes. We're the ones the morris dancers mock. It is The Gathering of
Nations. Just up the road so I can nip back to my warm comfy bed every
    time out.
Oriental gallery and old stabby things it is then.
I've got Bear's recipe for duck - lovely it is. Must do it again soon.

  13. Yeah the Oreintal gallery was great. Some of the workmanship on the swords
    looked incredible.

    *perk*

Ice climbing wall? Now *there's* something I really fancy trying.

And the ski slope would be handy, too.

Hmmm... wonder if I can get my employer to pay for it... I mean, they're
paying for golf lessons for some of the people on the project, why
should my chosen leisure interest be any different?

    On Tue, 17 Aug 2004 16:11:28 +0000 (UTC), Keelworm

    Leeds
Grandparents lived in Wrenthorpe for a couple of years - I still know
    bits of the area.
Love the place, try to get up at least twice a year so I can see the
sculptures in different seasons. Every time I go I walk round, think
then go back and make some major change to my life (quit job,
separated, other things) so as I'm extremely happy atm I'll give it a
    miss this time.
    But awful beer.
May have a look at these, but I'm not a 'things' person.
    I am.
    have seen, it is.
    Doesn't appeal.
    Too cold.
there's enough there for a few hours.
This is a bad point in my book :)
    Good. looking forward to it.
    Ta. will do.

Tetley is fookin' shaite, any fule kno that. It allus tastes as it
has washing up liquid in it. It's a design feature. I'd personally
rate it as slightly worse than Red Barrel or whatever they used to put
in the tins of Party Seven or whatever they called that particular
    pissinnacan.

There are some fantastic pubs in Leeds mind - generally in the
scruffier areas and down round the station. Loads of excellent beers
and lots of live bands - up the road in Bradford is the place to go
    for curries, of course.

  17. I lived there in the 1960s, and Tetley's always tasted like old steam
train chimney sweepings. Funny what you get used to :)What's them? Ah, things have changed in the last 40 years obviously.

I could always spend an hour or so wandering round the huge covered
market. And on a flying through visit recently I found that they'd done
a Covent Garden to the Corn Exchange, very nice place to waste an hour
or so watching the world go by.

Palace of stainless steel. Not worth a visit ... unless you *like*
    stainless steel.
Tis true. You need to go to the most run down and disgustingly spit
and sawdust pub you can find in the slum areas to get it though [1].
Could be. I had a pint served to me just after opening time and I
could taste the fluid they had used to clean the pipes. Curiously,
several people served before me did *not* complain.

[1] Experience based on my last drinking in Leeds 25 years ago.

Aye, the one across from the station (Scarbrough Hotel) is Leeds CAMRA
pub of the year - unfortunately I've always put off going in there
because of the large number of suited oiks standing outside.

There's one near-ish to that called The Prince of Wales - looks slightly
rougher round the edges, but much more my kind of place.
Haven't found the live bands yet, but I think the gig list for The
Cockpit could be worth keeping an eye on.
Yeah, but that'd mean getting the car out of the car park[0] or getting
a taxi, both of which are too much like hard work when you'd done an
    11-hour day.

[0] More hassle than you'd think.
