Ok I'm thinking of finally taking the plunge and getting a lathe.

I've had a look around and it seems like a Myford ML7 or even better a
Super7 if I can find one. Preferably one with a gearbox so I can play at
    thread cutting.

Are those good models to start with? Things to look out for? Do you know
anyone with one for sale, what sort of price do you think I could pick
one up for? It seems the extra bits-n-bobs can add up to quite a lot, so
ideally I'd like to get one with all the accessories included.

    TIA

ML7s are perfectly good machines, but tend to sell at something of a
premium. If you have a little more space, then a Boxford can be a good
choice. There are lots of pretty reasonably priced new small lathes from
people like Warco and Arceuro. These seem to be of tremendously variable
quality, so don't buy one you haven't played with.
On a used lathe, a list a mile long... Best advice is to trot over to
uk.rec.models.engineering where opinions are like arseholes, but a lot
    of good guys abound.
I'm out of touch with pricing, but you are totally correct with the cost
of tooling. Allow about as much again as you spend on the lathe.
    Seriously.

You should consider looking for auctions of engineering stuff. I've ot a pal
(Coffin dodger now) who bought an ML7 with a shit load of acessories plus a
**** off massive band saw for about the same price as a Makita hammer drill
not 10 minutes from where he lives. Less than 300 quid for the lot and there
was a lot of other stuff available too and all at silly money.

With the way things are going now, I'm sure there must be a small
engineering shop or two going tits up in your neck of the woods, you just
    need to find them.

Actually, I've just had a thought. I'm not sure if he ever uses this lathe,
so I'll ring him later and find out. If he wants to let it go, he may want a
bit more than he paid for it, but tha never knows.

What's your budget? My dad may well be selling some of his kit in the
    near future.

Yes good idea. I'm trying to stay away from e-bay, a 'proper' auction
    might be much better.
    That would be great, ta.

I'd be interested too. Not that bothered about screw cutting, etc, but
the ability to turn up small bushes and part things off would be
    useful.

He's not playing ball Simon. "I think I'll hang on to it" which is a bad
idea seeing as it's never used.

    What is this concept?

    Oh, I don't know. I got a free set of so-called "professional"
screwdrivers from Halfords the other week, when buying some oil. I'm
quite tempted to stick them on eBay or something, as I really don't need
    another set.

*Professional*! I've just got 2 set of them as I had to buy 2 lots of oil.
Bloody 'orrible things, and not a Philips among them!
Still, they'll make good use a chisels and punches I guess ;o)

Flat and Pozidrive only, are they? I haven't looked that closely.
Apparently the retail price is nearly 20 quid:
    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/..._productId_180958_langId_-1_categoryId_165572

They'll definitely be going on eBay.

'Fraid so. But you can buy a matching Philips for about 4 quid.
They certainly are, but I doubt they sell many, hence them being given away!
   )
I may well do the same.

It's collectors fever. Buy stuff, never use it, just watch it rot away.

I don't flog tools either, but if I had something that I knew I'd never use
again, then I could be tempted just to make space for something I *would*
    use.

Don't you find that the day after you've parted company with an old tool
(f'nar) you bloody well need it and have to go hunting for a new one?
