Heh. Hardly news, there's a hell of a lot of COBOL about.

I may drop back into it at some point, if it becomes lucrative enough.

The pimps were offering me serious money in the runup to y2k but the
neutron herding guys had a bigger budget for their mountain of Fortran
spaghetti and won my favours for the duration. A lot of people made
serious money around the late 90s.

COBOL usually implies London, which I try to avoid like the plague,
engineering people tend to work in nicer places and are easier to get
on with than the weary bankers.

  4. I don't know what Hitchin's like, but it would take more than a big
salary to pursuade me to live in California. And particularly the Bay
    Area.

Palo Alto, just a bit south of SF, is actually my favourite part of
the USA. Lovely little town and nice countryside, plus they know how
to serve food and wine properly, which is one of the things that makes
California stand apart from the rest of the US.

You'd still have to pay me a hell of a lot to live there, mind.

It must have changed. All I remember of Palo Alto is anonymous Californian
suburbia and nachos etc. on Camino Real. Or am I thinking of Menlo Park?

Dunno. There _is_ a Camino Real, and of course PA extends in all
directions in a generic American-suburban sprawl, but I was really
only referring to the town centre, which is unique in my limited
experience of the US in having a very well defined centre that you can
walk around, with bookshops, restaurants, bars, even a public library,
all in the same five or six blocks square.

It's apparently at least partially due to the UC Berkely campus being
just across the road, so it's serving a population that isn't
    inherently car-linked, IYSWIM.

    Really?

I've always thought if things were different I could quite see myself
enjoying living in the bay area; good enough climate, fantastic
scenery, some great roads etc. etc. I like California.

Then again... I could also quite fancy Arizona.

Spoiled for choice over there. It looks as if the wetbacks are set to
take over but you and I will be dust before then.

  19. I know **** all about Cobol, but I'd live in the Bay Area like a shot.

Perhaps I could just go and drive BART trains?
