I need to do my steering head bearings. The problem is that
fancy-shaped top yoke nut needs a special tool to remove it. While
these are available I'm still looking at about 30 quid for what's
    essentially a socket.

Does anyone have one that I can borrow for small recompense, or know of
a method to get this one off?

I plan to replace it with a normal nut until such time as putting it
back is preferable. Anyone know of a reason why this is "bad"?

  3. by do, do you mean tighten or replace?

tighten you'll have no problems (apart from needing another BFO
socket), if its replace then expect a couple of days work and an angle
grinder cos you *wont* be able to get the fucker off. Dont do what Tim
did and grind too much off!

Well I got a 3/4" drive socket set that goes up to 56mm so what size you
    need?

If you can get near some kind of hoist to lift the entire bike off the
ground you should be able to do the whole job in about 1 hour. No need
to fart about removing the plastics and all the other crap.
    Thanks Adie :)

    Erk.

There's a pronounced knocking coming from the bars, too much to be just
the discs moving in the carriers.

I'm hoping tighten up will be enough, but somehow I suspect it's going
    to be replace.

With a spot of luck, a manual and a stand should be here by the weekend
which will make it a bit easier than it is now.

Well, it's a cylindrical nut (i.e. not hexagonal) with a number of
small cylindrical holes around the top, in which pegs locate and turn
    the nut.

This is why I want to replace it with something a little easier to
    do/undo.

It'll be replace, you can only re-tighten so much.
What kind of stand are you going to use?

I don't know how much it's been done before, but it seemed ok when I
picked it up. It's on 12500 miles now.
An abba superbike. I've got a couple of options for raising the front.

I have a vague memory that it's not so simple because the threaded but
is sunken in the top yoke.
