    Hi TOG,

    I'd appreciate your advice.

I'm off to New Zealand in a couple of months and I'm trying to decide
whether to sell the bike or ship it.

    It's a Black BMW R1150GS Adventure
    Condition is good.
First Registered 03/03 so it's a twin spark model.
It has ABS, Heated Grips, Engine Bars and a 30 litre tank but is otherwise
    standard.
    22,000 miles.
    FBMWSH.

    TIA

Don't really know yet. But it is a medium to long term rather than a short
term thing. i.e sell / ship bike and car as well as renting out the house.

Ooo lucky thing. What are you planning to be doing there?

I've always wanted to visit but *hate* long flights. Probly going to
Singapore around the 25th though, which might break me in gently. Being a
wuss I will probably do a stopover in Bahrain.

Work as a Consulting Engineer (i.e what I do here)
When you've done a few long flights you tend to consider a 7 - 8 hour
transatlantic flight relatively short. Having an Ipod / MP3 player helps
while away the time and flying in business class [1] makes the whole thing
more pleasurable. FWIW I'll be stopping in Hong Kong to see my tailor.

    1. If the Porsche thread is anything to go by I assume this would be within
    your means.

You lucky, lucky bastard. If you want to stick with big trailees but
not necessarily a GS, the top aftermarket Tiger parts supplier on the
planet is in Nelson, if that's within spitting distance -

Cool stuff. Well, I might come and visit, then, because I've always
wanted to go to NZ, and there's some great biking roads there, and now
I've got two mates there (or nearly there).

    When are you off?

Good luck with that, big fellah.

It's a fucking long way to come when Shaun breaks down though, innit?

Leaves the North Africa run without a support/camera vehicle, too. Selfish

Do Adventures have a short or overdrive 6th gear as standard? I've
ridden my mates non Adv GS and liked it apart from the overdrive 6th.

    Yup:

    http://www.micapeak.com/bmw/gs/gs_1150.htm

If you don't like the tall 6th, don't use it. It's mainly for relaxed
    long-distance/motorway cruising.

Adventures are available with the option of a shorter first gear for off
road use but as Platy says the top gear is the same as the standard RGS.

platypus emerged from their own little world to say
    bzzt

That URL refers to the 1150GS, like mine; it has the tall 6th gear as
standard. As you say, 6th gear is rarely used unless doing over 70mph.

this URL: http://www.micapeak.com/bmw/gs/gs_adv.htm refers to the GSA. It
comes with the normal gear as standard and an optional lower 1st gear. The
tall 6th gear was available as a no cost option too IIRC

Just found this. Sue me if the formatting goes west.

    Gear Speed at 1,000rpm
    R1100GS R1150GS
    1st 6.0 mph 6.9 mph
    2nd 8.7 mph 8.9 mph
    3rd 12.3 mph 11.1 mph
    4th 15.3 mph 13.6 mph
    5th 18.0 mph 15.7 mph
    6th - 20.3 mph

The original is halfway down here:

A 25 minute flight from where I live now. A 20 minute flight from
