Not every RAF pilot was an officer. Sometimes you really push the
boundaries of stupidity and other times you're just as thick as shit.

  4. Sadly, many Gloster Gladiator pilots would disagree.
Not to take anything away from the Poles, of course.

  5. It's the three-bladed prop that misled, I suspect. In the popular mind a
    three-blader is an early Spitfire.

There were also a fair few British fighter pilots who only held the
    rank of Sergeant

Not from what I have read. It's often referred to as an ME109, but all
official paperwork uses the designation BF109[1], right up to the final
    K variant.

Still CBA to Google, but it might be that AR15/M16 or L85/SA80 sort of
    thing.

I should have qualified the statement by making it clear that the
machines should have been designed around the same time, obviously a man
armed with an AK47 is far superior to someone with slingshot, although
David of biblical fame might prove me wrong. The Hurricane was quick to
build, took incredible punishment, could be repaired quickly and was a
good gun platform but it did not have the performance of the 109s. Good
tactics and the killer instinct of the Polish pilots more than made up
    for this deficiency.

The Gloster Gladiator was an obsolete aircraft being flown by very brave
crews against far superior opposition, unfortunately we did not have
anything else at the time which could do their job.

MA235. Ordered as a Mk Vc on 28 May 1942 but built as an F Mk IXc
fitted with a Merlin 61 at Castle Bromwich

    From the RAF record card: 12MU 15-5-43 341S 24-5 316S 29-7 302S 28-9
    AST 5-2-44 310S 7-12-44 312S 27-8-45 RHAF 31-3-48

Accepted from the manufacturer by 12 Maintenance Unit on 15 May 1943,
to 341 squadron on the 24th, then in short succession to 316 and 302,
to Air Service Training in Feb '44 probably for repairs, back to
active service with 310 and 312 from December '44 until August '45.
Probably stored from then until delivered to RAF Pershaw for
preparation to be sold to the Greek airforce in 1948. Ultimate fate
    unknown.
