IIRC, the asking price was pretty close to your assessment. Hog's
looking for the value after it has been sorted.

  3. Exactly. That's the value when it's sorted.

I wasn't joking when I said about carbs being out-of-balance.

Many engines, the small Zephyrs included, can make *very expensive* sounding
noises at tick-over that go away as you raise the revs, just due to carbs
    needing balancing.

Whether the noises come from the primary drive or the clutch has been the
subject of some dispute but we had many a "basket case" into The Workshop,
only to ride out happy after a carb tweaking.

*Sometime* the carbs being that far out is due to a fault such as a tight
    valve or an intake/exhaust leak.

Anyway, I'd start by checking the carbs before planning any major surgery.

More like a bag of large spanners being hit with a reciprocating dead
    cat.

Oh, I don't know, 26k without an oil change and rev the **** from cold
    would probably do it.
