Paging TOG: could I have a valuation please? Oh, and FS: Blackbird

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Martin Coogan, Jun 8, 2006.

  1. Hi.

Apologies in advance for verbosity [1], and re-posting [2].

1999 (October V plate) fuel injection model Blackbird in Candy Glory Red,
    26,000 km (=16,500 miles-ish),
    MOT December, tax September,
    Nuvo tinted flip-up screen,
    Pyramid hugger (black plastic),
    Scottoiler,
Datatool Veto alarm with 2 fobs,
    Datatagged.
    Photos here:
    http://www.martincoogan.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/blackbirdphotos/

The paintwork is generally in very nice condition, apart from the right side
fairing panel where there are scuff marks and some small scratches, but they
don't detract from the appearance unless you get up close.
    http://www.martincoogan.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/blackbirdphotos/pages/bike 001.htm

I have a vgc used replacement panel in the wrong, 1998, red, which needs
spraying to colour, and decal. Which I CBA to get done.

What do you reckon it's worth? I was thinking around £3,800-ish as a private
sale, maybe a bit more. MCN classified sellers are asking around £4,000,
some up to £4,250. EBay I can't get a feel for, as lots of them don't make
reserve price, but the ones that have sold have gone cheaply AFAICS.

I was offered £3,400 as a trade in (against a pricey bike, admittedly),
which makes me wonder if I'm undervaluing it.

    Parker's Guide http://www.parkers.co.uk/pricing/used_bike/ seems
ostentatiously way off with trade price £2,655, private £3,105 and dealer
    price £3,365.

I'd appreciate your opinion, as I'm a bit stuck deciding what's a reasonable
    price to ask.

    Thanks very much,
    Martin.

    <backs away respectfully, MSOHP>

[1] Well at least no-one can say "what fucking colour" or "where is it,
    ****."

[2] BY's news server went tits up today, and the original still doesn't show
    up from Wednesday morning.

More guff below if someone is interested in buying or having a look,
otherwise please don't waste your time reading on.

Supplied new by DK Motorcycles in Newcastle under Lyme as a parallel import
    2 owners prior to me
I've owned it since March 2002, bought from Bikeworld Southend
kph speedo with transparent plastic mph overlay on glass
Not sure whether it's got a UK headlight, but I've never had a problem
getting it MOT'd so I assume so
Honda dealer happy to service and MOT it
Chain and sprockets have covered 8,000 miles, chain wear indicator is on the
    line between new and green
Brake pads have covered 5,000 miles
Dunlop D207s -front 4mm left, covered 1,000 miles, rear about 2.5mm left
    Headrace bearings changed December 2004
New sealed battery 2003, always Optimated

    Servicing:
    1031 miles Oil and filter
4934 miles I'm guessing oil and filter...
8694 miles Chain and sprockets, oil and filter (written in service book)
11824 miles All brake pads, brake fluid, plugs oil and filters (o+a)
14931 miles Oil and filter only, bill but no stamp in service book
    15165 miles (£374.83 December 2005 - ouch) brake/clutch fluid, plugs oil and
filters (o+a) and checking valve clearances I believe - invoice just lists
    parts/fluids

I've got the V5C, bills (except services 2 and 3), all the old MOTs, tax
discs, stamped service book, owner's manual, toolkit, Haynes BOL, pdf
service and parts manuals, paperwork for the alarm and datatagging, spare
headlight bulb, two keys, two alarm fobs and a spare key blank. And some
    Scottoil.
The alarm circuit board was replaced under warranty in 2003, the fobs had
new batteries at the same time.
There is a new GIVI monorack included if wanted, along with the replacement
fairing panel (can post if you live miles away).

Bike is in Chelmsford, Essex. Always garaged, not abused, treated with
mechanical sympathy. Nowt needs doing to it.

I'd happily keep it, but I just had a rush of blood to the head and bought
an R1150RS. I can't really justify (or afford, really) having both.

Test rides welcome subject to licence, insurance and folding money
    returnable deposit (price TBA obviously).

To arrange, email me at: full name (mine, of course) with no spaces at
    blueyonder.co.uk.

<purchases extra bandwidth to cope with rush and leans back, flipping a coin
    and whistling>

    Cheers,
    Martin.

  2. Sorry to rain on your parade, but I reckon £3k or slightly over, it
being a parallel and all. Birds are available very cheaply these days,
as oyu've noticed. Remember asking prices aren't selling prices.

Blimey, it must have led a hard life.

Mine's done 22k miles, and it's still on original C&S, head races, and
    battery.

  5. My parade was already cancelled due to flooding :)

One dealer did offer me £3k to buy it; sounds like I should buttonhole him
then if I can't wangle more on the open market.
Well that's what I was thinking, but there seem to be a fair few at £4k and
over. Optimistic buggers all then, I suppose.

    TYVM for your advice.

    Martin.

  6. Oh, I dunno. I checked it over a year. Worst was 37.57, best 42.77, overall
41 mpg. Not that bad surely?

I hate to piss on your firework, but my old carbed Blackbird used to
turn in 41 mpg all the time regardless of riding style, gurly or
otherwise. Even on the trip to Mugello it turned in exactly 41mpg.
However, having said that the FI version is much thirstier, although I
don't check it that accurately I would estimate it does about 34-36mpg.

Indeed, I was offered 2.5K for mine by Infinity a couple of years ago,
    to which I answered 'bollocks'

Eventually got 3.4K on a trade in, this being on a 1997 Carbed model
with 29K miles on the clock, which I deemed a significant result.
I go on tank range, rather than MPG. The Bird would get around 155 to
the tank, at normal cruising altitiude. Whereas the 12R will only get
140-ish at the very outside, riding as frugally as possible, which is
pants (and boring) on a big sports tourer.
    Well, that's a given .. ;)

    Cheers

    Paul.

My carbed one was like Oliver Reed at a free bar. Had it down to 25mpg in
town. Maybe it was fucked. Good job I sold it ;-)

I don't suppose I could interest Sir in a similar mileage but from less

May I interst Sir in in 198 miles on 14.81 litres on a K1100LT. Yes, I was
riding like a gurl, but in my defence I don't care, it was a great day round
Mid wales and included the obligatory goat tracks, long lunch etc. etc.

Heh, thanks for doing the figures, never bothered calculating them
    before.
Well, they do, but that 140 includes riding carefully and the bike
sucking on dry by then, coupled with the uncertainty of the the very
    pessimistic 'bar type' fuel guage.

e.g. from brimmed, I was down to 1 bar (but not flashing, indicating
    reserve) by Cambrai from Sedan.

On the 'bird, you could ride briskly, though smoothly, and get a decent
    range.
    Welcome to Bandit country ;-)

    Blimey!

On the way back from Sedan I got 165 miles out of a tank with
(apparently) 3l left (or rather I managed to get 19l in).

I do ride like a girl though.
