Paging TOG: Are these things really this expensive?

  1. Item number: 260395997724

1991 BMW R80GS with a buy it now price of £2900

When I was still up north, guy at work had one (much older though) and
I always rather liked the look of it.

Wasn't thinking of buying it - just stumbled across it in my browsing
for a memory foam mattress :)

  2. They're hugely in the want, yes, but this one is a tad overpriced. I'd
say £2250-2400 would be nearer the mark. Timo will be along in a minute,
and he's more up on ShiterOldAirheadBoxers than I am.

Yes, they're quite sought after by the round-the-world brigade, plus
they're quite a lot of fun to ride. I certainly wouldn't mind another
    one.

That said, I think the is off quite noticeably for something that
doesn't even have verifiable mileage (the speedos on these break with
annoying regularity and there is no way to tell if the other one you get
with the bike is actually the original one). Also, given the "I've been
told" statements, it seems that there is a lot of hearsay and not very
much verifiable in the way of service history.

2250, potentially less when you actually start finding other stuff on
    the bike.

Having waved bye bye to the Harley yesterday morning, I had to react to
fill the gap in my garage before T fills it with shoes or ponies or
other girlie stuff. Obvious answer was to drive to my father's place and
roll the R65 out from where it's sat for the last 7 years and fire it up

OK, it did piss petrol over my feet from the carbs (it's a sign of
affection in SOBoxers), but the fact that it fired up and ran without
much encouragement on 7+ year old petrol goes some way to explain
peoples' love of SOBoxers and the high prices they sometimes command.

This did lead to a lengthy conversation regarding whether it was right
for me to have 2 SOBoxers (the jury's still out) but that did get me to
thinking; If I could only have one SOBoxer, what would it be.

I reckon either a 80 or 100 paralever G/S (but not the ebay one as it's
not right for the money) or an R100 Mystic. Or an R80RT mono or R65RS or
course. Not the R90S, as if I want a "performance" SOBoxer, I'd want the
    later chassis.

Right, I'm off out on the Zed to clear my head and help me choose

  6. An R100GS, with uprated brakes, or another R100RS.

No need to have the twin-shock vs mono discussions again on the RS; you
can have the older one and I'll have the newer one. Ebony and ivory,
    live together in perfect harmony...

And another thing... I only got the phone out to take the video as I
thought "Oh, TOG might like this", I spent about 1/2 hour trying and
failing to send it to you from the phone so eventually give in, drove
home and shoved it on youtube.

But not a word, nothing. Dunno why I bother :-(

As soon as it fired up, I was wandering about grinning like a Cheshire
    cat though.

Very nice and my fav colour for the year.

I never much liked the GS's, they are less good road bikes and in no way a
good off road bike. A late 100RS (mono) with the heads and carbs
derestricted is the best airhead money can buy.

I love my R100RT. Don't know why I didn't 'get into' them years ago.

I'd love to build a cafe-racer around an R100 Mystic.

  19. A friend had one as a loaner for a long time while his early oilhead was
being fixed under warranty. Nice bike, apparently, but rather slow and
dreaful fuel consumption as it was muffled and detoxed into oblivion.

    Last-gasp airhead model, wasn't it?

    Yeah, it was, AFAIK.

Thought it was pretty much the engine I have in a Paralever frame.
