Why gay? The word is simply a synonym for screw, ****, shag, etc.

my last shoulder breakage; being in pain from the main injury, it seemed

I was thinking of giving him a hearty slap on the back, but he'd
probably get whiplash and sue me.

I've given myself minor whiplash on a number of occasions. I think it counts
as whiplash wherever you get it, not just on your neck. The times I can
remember off the top of my head are: spinal whiplash while windsurfing
(catapult fall, let go of the boom, but stayed attached by my harness -
twang), and neck whiplash from a few big tumbles while snowboarding
(normally from tripping my heel edge while wearing a rucsack).

Doesn't generally hurt that much at the time, but the following day it felt
like I'd seriously overdone weight training at the gym - muscles feel
bruised and swollen, and have very little strength in them. I find massaging
in ibuprofen gel to be pretty effective.

No emotion in it - flat calm, old bean.

However, you appear to value your time over potential paralysis which,
IMO, is a bit off centre.
