Paging those who own home telephones of a wireless nature

  1. My corded answering machine has died.

Do cordless phone/answering machines work in either capacity in a power cut?
My cordless phones don't work at all if there's no power and the
destructions say that I should also have a corded phone to use in
    electric-less situations.

  2. No, they don't. Buy an el-cheapo for a fiver to plug in if you get a power
    cut.

I have the system as described by Alison, but just after I bought the
cheapo plug in one I thought, the mobile would be just as good. So belt
    and braces.

  5. Unless they take the mobile networks down or they get overloaded, which is
what happened in London. :) At least an el-cheapo still works for 999/112.
But yes, mobile is a decent back up.

Put yourself on the (free at BT) 1571 service, and set your
answerphone to cut in on less rings than the 1571.

That way, if the power goes out, you can still get messages, but from
1571 instead of your own machine.

Cordless phones rely on a power supply, that's why they don't work in a
power outage. Normal phones don't need a power supply, so they don't care if
your house hasn't got power, only if the supplying company has.

  8. Well, it wasn't so much the answering machine part as the ability to make
calls. I wondered if any of the new cordless answering machines worked off
    BT's power.

    Oh, yeah.

Good job I got both belts and braces then.

  11. Not enough current. Anyhow, BT don't allow it. :)

I'll have to either drink less wine, or perhaps fewer bottles. Cheers!
