Looking through my late father's papers I found

    BELSEN CONCENTRATION CAMP PASS 'B'
    Serial No 30/2
    No ...... Rank S/SGT Name ....... Regt/Corps RAMC
is stationed in the Camp Area and is authorised to enter Camps 1/2/3@ and
    Hospital Block on duty.

Date of issue 2/MAY/45 .......... Colonel,
    Commander.
    No 2 Control Section.
    Signature of Holder ...............

NB. No person will enter any of the above unless fully protected by Typhus
Innoculation and dusted with AL powder prior to entry.

@. Delete where applicable. (nothing deleted)

It's stamped "No. 30 Field Hygiene Section RAMC" "Orderly room File
    Index No. ....."

So he perhaps wasn't there when it was liberated but quite soon after.

    Eiron wibbled forthrightly:
Only by a couple of weeks. I'm sure he still had his work cut out for
    him.

The subject just seems wrong to me.

I have a similar problem with my RSS reader. There is a button which I
can press if I "like" something. I presume this information then goes
off into the cloud somewhere to help other users decide which articles
    are worthwhile reading.

Unfortunately I find myself pressing the "like" button a lot of the time
when it should be labelled "dislike" or "grumpy".

  6. Fascinating stuff.
I have a disc of footage taken by the US Army of newly-liberated small
camps, which was shown to various groups to just put them in the
picture. These were just work and conc camps, not death camps, although
the result ended up being much the same for the unlucky sods in them.
There were several camps on it I'd never heard of and I was left with
the impression that many towns had one nearby, which had escaped the
glare of publicity because of the overwhelming discoveries of the big
    ones.

You can't blame my dad for that. Try the Catering Corps.

They say good comedy is all about timing.

It's also exactly the same joke as Nigel was alluding to.

....an essay on how odd it is to use the word "fan" in relation to a war
    where 60 million died.
