While visiting the local auction house earlier this afternoon and getting
there about 40 lots before the one i was interested in, I sat with coffee in
hand and listened to the auctioneer auction a load of seperate woodworking
    tools.

And i mean craftsman type stuff.
Now im shite at woodwork and the nearest thing i remember to proper woodwork
tools was a stanley plane in my dads shed.

However, these planes, chisels etc were obviously worth a couple of quid,
    rosewood inlaid handles etc etc.

Now, there was one plane, a little one, with a stanley No. 1 blade in it and
it didn't sell. Why? Because it didn't reach its reserve of £500!!

Can these things really be worth *that* much?

I saw a programme on Discovery Home & Leisure presented by John
Revell. He was interviewing a master woodworking chap about planes.
The ones this bloke had could take a piece off the _grain_ of a block
of hardwood that was a thin as tissue paper but complete in one piece.

    They cost thousands iirc.

No. Not if it's the tool you are interested in. If It's historic in some way
then that's what you're paying for.

I bought a Stanley 10" plane to level a piece of douglas fir. I can't
remember the price but it was sub £30. It did a fantastic job. I had to buy
(and learn to use) a blade sharpener, so let the full cost be £40.

If you do get into woodwork you will find that you pay decent money for
decent tools - is that not true of every craft?

Further to what I said above; it's possible there were a few collectors
in the room. Old woodworking tools are collectable now.

Let's face it; it's the nearest some of those bidding are going to get
to holding a decent tool in their hands.

Sometime around Sat, 05 Feb 2005 20:45:21 +0000, Donegal Paul babbled on
    about:
Yes but for the wrong reasons, people buy now as an investment and not to
use the tools for what they were designed. Interest from America in
German and English hand tools has pushed them to prohibative prices,
compounded by the word 'antique' tacked on anything over 30 years old. Sadly
this often means such hand tools are pushed out of reach of normal
people, as an example a 50 year old jointer plane has a weight and quality
hard to find in new hand tools.

It is worth Walking down the lane opposite Sainsburys garage in Kempston
and speaking to the chap that runs the wood yard for an old fashioned view
    on woodworking.
