Aldi have Chateau Neuf du Pape on offer on Thursday at £9.99 a bottle.
    Should be worth a punt

Was the first question which sprang to my mind.

Doesn't say, but apparently it's some silver award winner.

    Have you tried Vacqueyras?

Next door neighbour, cheaper and not quite so heavy

It's a "brand" thing for some. This evening I've been enjoying a nice
Lirac AOC from t'other side of the Rhone. It's very good for the £5
investment. Probably better than a £10 Ch du Pape.

I put away a bottle of CNdP this evening, but Vacqueyras is just a bit
    lighter

    and cheaper

I would't describe CdP as heavy in the first place, although yes, I
agree that Vacqueyras can be a slightly softer more rounded wine. And
personally, I'd choose it any time over a CdP.
Too fucking right. Lirac is one of the few really good wines that make
it into my cellar (alongside the cases and cases of Lidl and Aldi
specials). Cornas is another superb Rhone, quite different in
character, that occupies a quarter rack as well.
