  1. Fucking hero he was for us French.

I still recall the televised debate, when he was running for President, and
he looked the camera in the .. er, in the eye, but you know what you mean,
and said, 'If I am elected, I shall abolish the death penalty'. France at
that time was roughly 65% in favour. When he was, he kept to his promise:
Law 81-908 of 9 October 1981 is famous among French anti-death penalty
campaigners such as me. Its first phrase rang out as a battle cry against
tyranny, against state barbarity, against the unbridled power of the state,
and shone the Republican torch of liberty into every nook and cranny of
the planet, giving hope and succour to the weak, to the condemned, to the
    forgotten ...

'La peine de mort est abolie'

<fx: gazes proudly into middle-distance, flaxen hair streaming out behind
    in wind ...>

One of the two people from the last century I wish I'd met. The other was
    Balavoine.

If Joni Mitchell and Noam Chomsky are reading this ... don't die, OK??

    I don't think that's Des - it's no where near snide enough.

Not really, no. But if it makes you happy, it can't be that bad.

your french is as ropey as TOG's...

  6. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember "platypus"
I repeat my assertion above. For no other reason than that, Britain and
France should have kept a pair.

Alas, it was not to be.

We descend into mediocrity; ruled by the grey men with grey minds.

  8. I don't give a shit, really. Even a hint of Ds and the curtain rings
down. Life is too short to sort out the real from the fake.

  11. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, ogden
Are you seriously suggesting that would make a difference?

<VBG> been doing my bit as much as possible, and been a friend for some
time now. My mate Rusty has been very involved in the project and is on one
of the pics on the side.
Its been a long time coming but we knew she'd be flying in 2006.

I can just about remember, my cousin flew them back then too and we spent
quite a bit of time at RAF Waddington watching them fly. Its a sound that
you can feel go straight through you - wonderful.
That'd be amazing, I may have to go.

Could someone please tell dear TOG - who is one of the more reliable 'bons
oeufs' on UKRM and, in a wider audience, would be a national treasure - that
    I am not a Des-morph; a Des-reciprocal, perhaps, or even an antimatter-Des.
I don't find Des as big a tosser as many folk here, but that's my problem.
This is probably because he reminds me of a prize prat with whom I was at
school. He somehow couldn't manage to be popular, so he set on a course to
irritate, needle, infuriate and upset as many people as possible; pupils,
staff, dinner-droids - their hatred was a perverse badge of acceptance for
him. I met him 15 years on - very much by accident - and he was still at
it. He seemed to have found his spiritual home in advertising.

BTW a shagging from ogden would be, shall we say, unwelcome.

Which RAF plane had the two engines stacked on top of each other? We had
a flight of them visit Bitburg AB in the mid 60s. We were told they were
    Lightnings.

That's them. Last time they flew as an active part of the RAF over here was
with 11 Squadron in Lincs and they stopped in the late 80s....

Used to use about half their fuel just taking off, if used in a more
    throttle happy manner, too....

yebbut the front of the plane looks different then I remember. I
*thought* you could see both intakes, which made it look wicked as hell.
