It is definitley possible, but your hardware needs to be able to boot from
USB for a start. Other than that AIUI simply write a bootable .iso to the
stick and set the machine to boot from the USB device.

Should be JD but I've never done it.

  6. And received with thanks. Unfortunately, I have been unable to trace an
emoticon which signifies "leaps up into air, raises legs parallel with
floor and clicks heels together in a display of joy" :)

  7. He mentioned "using the Force". And apparently, a chicken had to give
up its life to conclude the process. ;-)

As you indicated it was an essential set of files and thus important to you
    and/or your business.
Just remember me when the next "TextileTest" items you spoke about come in
ad need a long term test ;-)

  10. Actually, the files you retrieved are vital to ongoing pro bono
standards work in which I am involved. They are the final drafts of the
European Standards for motorcyclists' clothing, and are of circa 1999
vintage. Since the existing EN 13595 specifically excludes garments
used in competition (an exclusion lobbied for by, amongst others,
certain Italian companies who happen to manufacture racing suits), I
have proposed a further standard for racing suits. I could have written
this new document "longhand", but having the original format to use as
a template and to overwrite will save a *lot* of time - and with the
first meeting to discuss this work taking place later this month, time
    is in short supply.
I am in your debt. :)

  11. Well, I had partial success, following (mainly) the destructions
at http://www.linuxjournal.com/node/7630/print (all done in WinXP, BTW):

    a) used WinRAR to copy the contents of the .iso to the (FAT) stick.
    b) copied all the stuff from the isolinux directory to the root directory;
this includes syslinux.cfg, vmlinuz and initrd.img. The rest just give you
the splash and help screens, mainly.
    c) downloaded syslinux and made the stick bootable.

I was then able to boot and proceed through the familiar "linux
rescue" path, until it asked me where the distro was. When I said Hard Disk
it asked which disk and directory. Told it the memory stick and various
directories, but it seems adamant that it's looking for .isos at that point.
At that stage I found that my colleague had worked out how to run loadlinux
so I've dropped the project, apart from "professional interest".

Thanks to all for the replies.

Sounds rather more convoluted than I intended. I might have a crack at it
    at some point.
    Sensible.
