Paging the ukrm IT guru(s): Windows Drivespace

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Varnsverry, Jul 1, 2005.

  1. I need to retrieve several draft standards documents from a floppy disk
which I formatted in Windows Drivespace several years ago.
Unfortunately, Drivespace isn't supported by Windows 2000. Can anyone
offer advice on how I can access the files?

    Thanls in advance.

Very rapid googling dunt show anything currently available in 3rd party.
    Otiosn would seem to be:
    1) FInd / beg / borrow access to a machine with 98 on it, and get teh data
    pff with that
    2) Install vmware or similar in 2k, install 98 on the vmware machine, and
    use that.

Bit of a PITA either way

If you can't get anything sorted email a copy of the file to me and I'll
chuck Win98 Drivespace 3 on my old Windows machine and un DriveSpace it if I
can to a hard drive then zip the files up to send back if it helps

I very much doubt he'll be able to email the file if he can't read the disk.
    ISTBC though.

Fair point, but do you need to read what's "on" the disk to be able to send
    it?
I would expect it to be able to be sent as a file attachment. I might be
    wrong
If that won't work there's always the good old Post Office and a Jiffy Bag

    Nearly always, yes ;)
Having said that, I wonder if a modern piece of kit could take an image of
the disk, which he could then mail to you, you re-create the floppy and
away you go. I think it's unlikley and the 2k machine is just saying; Disk
    not formatted, or similar.
Thing about drivespace and similar compression utilities is they use a
totally different file structure, a bit like the difference between FAT,
FAT32, NTFS and so on. That was, at least, my understanding of the
technologhy. I've not used it for about 15 years though. It slowed
    everything down horribly IME
    Indeed, that *would* work.

  9. But stored carefully, and "properties" reads it as a full disk, so I
believe the data should still be present.

  10. Thanks Robbo. I have tried to attach the contents to an email, but only
the "Read This" text file is accesssible. Can you email me to advise
whether I should post the disk to the same address I have used
    previously, or to another one.

You might want to make an exact copy of the disk using some sort of
image copier. See[1] for a free prog. You'll then be able to email
    the file to helpful people.

I think I might be able to get access to something of the right
vintage, so feel free to bung a copy to me. Reply to address works.

As I recall it uses 2 files stored on a FAT volume.. one a compressed
version of the data, one an index file, both hidden...

Not too tricky to extract from, but a hassle.

  16. Tried it, but the compressed files do not appear, only the "Read This"
    text file.

  18. It must be possible. Recommendations as to how? It'd make bringing
up 16 GRID nodes without floppies or CD drives a lot easier if we could
boot the Scientific Linux CERN rescue disk through the USB port.

I just ordered a 1 GB stick from Crucial (£51).

Yep, been done... not all memory sticks are boot able though I think.
Depending on the setup of your CDrom distro, there are a number of ways
to acheive this. One way that springs to mind, is to partition / format
/ mount the USB device, then copy over everything from the CDrom, then
chroot to the USB device, then configure and re install the boot loader
to boot off the memory stick. Finally, configure the PC bios settings to
    boot off the memory stick.

You could take a dd image of the USB memory stick, then just dd it back
out to the other 15 sticks.
