Finally parting company with CB500s (1). It's been a good run (2 bikes
in 5 years) which I've thoroughly enjoyed. Ground hero blobs a lot,
but never managed to get rid of chicken strips.

Looking at ST1300 tomorrow, 04 plate, 25,000 miles. Anything Pan
specific that I should be looking out for?

    (1) Head gasket gone, revealed by contents of cooling system being
dumped out of breather hose onto back wheel. After replacing the
engine a year ago, I can't face that again, even though bike has just
had full service and MOT, so will punt it out as an engine replacement
    project.

Oh. I thought you were going say you'd bought an Amiga.

it's what I thought when I saw the subject line too. Though YM
    "Atari", not "Amiga".

I did buy an Atari ST about 20 years ago, to use as a MIDI sequencer.
    It came with Asteroids.

You can get cream for that.

I've still got mine in the loft, which I upgrade to a 1040 by
soldering in all the extra memory chips and caps myself!

They're dropping value like nothing else, from what I can see.

Whereas the old ST1100 values are holding firm, at worst.

ISTR the ST1300 is rather unloved.

    Oh. Well.

The ST and the Amiga were pretty concurrent, though the Amiga
outlasted the Atari by a couple of years.

    loser.

If you'd bought an Amiga, you could have fitted a daughterboard
upgrade in 20 seconds with no soldering.

  10. Only that you should be looking at an older 1100. Seriously.

My main problem with this is that I don't want a bike that is more
than 5 years old. The repair bills for the 1100 can be pretty steep.

    They can?

AFAIK, they're one of the most robust and reliable bikes ever made.

Didn't the police withdraw almost all their ST1300s due to some strange
    handling problem?

That may be, but several that I have looked at have recently had over
a grand spent on repairs following big ticket item failures..
AIUI they overloaded the back of the bike then experienced high speed
weave problems. I don't plan to replicate this.

Look at the mileages they do, though - and at what mileage did the
    failures happen?

There's a good reason why a late, low mileage ST1100 is more sought
    after than an early ST1300.

  16. Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Steve
Well generally, IME, some dozy **** puts the wrong fuel in and it's all
    downhill from there.

  17. A lot of private owners had the same problem, and (IIRC) there was some
recall for engine mounts, or whatever.

It may suit your needs perfectly, but it hasn't been one of Honda's
successful models and it's being replaced soon. Draw your own
    conclusions.

Unless it was an Amiga 1200; certain daughterboards only worked on
