Paging the safety nazis: Mesh jackets?

I have read controversy of them being made of polyester and melting when
    abrasion is applied.

Any thoughts in the UK or they are not popular in such weather?

I've only heard of mesh jackets being used as an over-jacket with something
like the "Halvarssons Level 1 Safety Jacket Inner". The inner layer has the
CE protection and you use a mesh summer outer or a full winter outer.

This is technology well documented on UKRM. Search Halvarssons and see

It seems, from Bruce's link, that some manufacturers have latched onto the
mesh thing to make a single garment. The price of £49 should tell you
something. I think I'd rather wear a cotton/denim jacket that will take a
bit of abrasion without embedding molten polyester into my skin. In
reality, I either wear my cheapo[1] leather jacket or a T shirt when it's
    hot.

[1] Sportex Apollo still going strong after 10 years[2]
[2] and amazingly I still fit into it

I have a Joe Rocket mesh jacket, which is just like a normal bike jacket
    but made from mesh.
The only real protection it offers is the padding at the appropriate
points, I suspect the abrasion resistance is approaching zero. However,
it stops the earache from the safety nazi SWMBO, so it has some value.

It tells you I am a cheapskate :)
I've been meaning to get the denim jacket to go with the jeans, but as
usual always find something else to do.

I bought a Tuareg jacket from Hein Gericke in Germany; mesh back (that
covers up with a zipped panel), front pockets that fold down to offer
mesh at the front and zipped arms and shoulders offering more mesh.
It's great in hot weather and cost 99 Euros. Don't see it on their
    website anywhere though.

I'm sure it would be fine if I crashed. Well, there would be other
things to worry about. To be blunt comfort when I'm riding is more
important to me than protection in case I crash. I don't plan on having
    accidents.
