Lost my internet connection today. Can't get an IP address in the WAN
    port windwos - just 0.0.0.0

Pipex's website says all systems running normally. Their helpline is
    blocked, which suggests otherwise.

    Anybody?

Ah. The address in this posting is dead. it's 'at dsl dot pipex dot
    com' now.

Yes, now I see: "Customers are advised that PIPEX will be performing
planned maintenance between 2am and 4am on Wednesday 23rd November.
During this time customers with logins containing xtreme and xtreme2
may suffer a short loss of service.

Customers are requested to turn off routers and modems during this
    time.

Should any customers experience difficulty reconnecting after this
maintenance, please try to reload routers/computers and ensure that any
routers are running the latest firmware version before calling the
    helpdesk for assistance.

PIPEX apologise for any inconvenience that this work may cause. "

Trouble is, I haven't got the details to reload the effing modem
router, have I? And I can't get it from Pipex because their line are
    jammed.

Simon Kenyon is permitted to smile at this point.

I lost my email service at just after 10.30 am Monday. It was back
first thing Tuesday before expiring again mid-morning. My domain host
reports a server has suffered terminal failure, and I have no
indication when service will be restored. Meanwhile, a client reports a
sudden and dramatic increase in spam, and a number of websites I have
tried to visit fail to load. It sounds like the technical problems
could be far-reaching, or is this all a coincidence?

Steph called about 30mins ago saying that our freeserve connection was
down. The router gets as far as sending out a PADI packet and then nothing.
I wonder if there's any commonality between Freeserve and Pipex

Reset the router (unplug, wait for 5, plug back in).

I didn't get the mail either, and I didn't unplug my router but it's
    all hunky-dory.

Right - this comes after all morning spent trying to (a) get through on
their helpline and (b) find a fix.

The maintenance fucked up certain modem/routers. Pipex says that you
need to do a firmware update on some (like my Netgear DG814).

So I asked, reasonably, how the hell I was supposed to download a
firmware update when I didn't have an internet connection.....

Pipex suggested dial-up. Er, yes, OK, where, to what, how?

Long story short, I've downloaded it here at work, burned it onto a CD,
and will (hopefully) install it when I get home tonight.

Helpline bods audibly fed up because (as I pointed out) not warning
people and not anticipating the possible consequences doesn't make
customers happy..... and they've had to field all the irate punters who
wouldn't be irate if the brass had engaged brain before cutting
    everyone off.

If I were you I would get not only the upgrade, but also:
    * The user manual and setup guide for your router,
    * The settings for Pipex (the upgrade will likely reset the router so
you have to enter all the connection details in again)
    * A previous, stable firmware (in case there's something wrong with the
    latest one)

Best of luck you don't get a power cut in the middle of the update.

It may be of limited use if it won't work at present, but it might help
if you sell it on / give it to someone else.
If the power goes off while it's reflashing itself it'll most probably
be knackered. We had a power cut last night while I was on my way home
from work. I'd set the drives to defrag before leaving.

The tech support. We used to go through all the possible scenarios any
changes might make and inform the customer. Now it seems they just go ahead
    with changes.

I have a recollection of seeing both freeserve and pipex servers hosted
in teh same datacentre at PlanetOnline (Energis) in Leeds. Could be
wrong though. This was a few years back.
