Paging the phone-isti and network-isti: connection dropping

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by The Older Gentleman, Jun 26, 2009.

  1. Right, this is bloody odd.

Have recently upgraded to IDnet's 24MB service, and since then have
    suffered dropping connections.

The Chateau's computers are at the back of the house. So is the main
phone, connected to the phone line entry point at the front, via a long
phone extension lead on a wind-in coil. There's a short ADSL cable
running from the wireless router via the usual microflter into the
    extension lead.

I know the ideal way is to have the microfilter where the phone line
enters the house at the front, and use a long ADSL cable to the computer
at the back, but this is the way we have it and it's always worked.

There's an extension in a bedroom upstairs.

If you lift the handset of the phone, you instantly lose the internet
connection and have to restart the computers. *Not* the wireless
    modem/router: just the computer(s).

I you lift the handset of the extension, no problems.

We have swapped over the phones - small handset downstairs and big phone
upstairs. if you do that, and lift either handset, you lose the
    connection.

    So:

    1. Where's the fault? The line?

    2. Would getting one of those wireless four-handset phones and
installing it upstairs sort things out?

    3. Any other suggestions?

I think the first thing I'd try, given it'll be straightforward, is
moving the wireless router to the entry point at the front.

Have you got a filter for the handset on the extension upstairs ?

Is the upstairs extension one of the DIY ones which plugs into the
master socket or a BT wired into the master socket ?

  7. Hm. Our problem isn't (a lack of) speed. It's just a disconnection when
you lift the handset of the dowstairs phone.

Just checking - you haven't got a filter on the line connecting the router
have you? The phones should be filtered but NOT the modem/router.

Sockets usually don't work that way, the connectors are wrong.
Plugging in is hard to stuff up.

It sounds for all the world like his old tough-as-nails router didn't
mind the noise from his second phone, but the new fancy sensitive 24meg
    router is dying a death.

Tog needs one microfilter per phone, unless he's got some clever wiring.

I can post him one if he needs one.

  12. Argh. Yes, looks like. Yes.

Just bought a new phone with two cordless handsets, too, but we were
    planning to do that anyway.

Set up the cordless system and all working fine now.
