I really haven't got a fucking clue about this stuff anymore, so any
    reasonable input wouldbe appreciated.

I need a video card for my box that does HDMI output for my (Dell) PC.
It currently runs a Radeon X600 or similar that came in the machine,
occupying what looks like a 16x PCIe slot and the box runs XP.

The Radeon 2400 looks like it should do the job - any reason it
    wouldn't? Games aren't a consideration - I have a PS2 and a Wii for
    that.

    TIA.

I'm currently using a Powercolor HD3870x2 (from scan) for this very
purpose and it works very well. Be aware though, that the current generation
of video cards do not support the latest Dolby true HD and DTS MA audio,
7.1 formats. The best you can manage is currently is their 5.1 channel
offerings. If you are using a full HD home cinema setup you currently
have to use plain old analogue outputs from your existing sound card
to get 7.1 channel. I believe though that some of the newest cards just
out, do now support 7.1 channel sound through HDMI. Worth bearing in mind
if lossless audio formats through HDMI is (or will be) important to you.

  3. 2400 should be spot on.

From all the cards I've looked at over the years, ATI have always seemed to
be better on Video Quality, performance / decode, where the Nvidia cards
    have had stronger 3d performance.
