You hardly ever snipped with OE, so nothing's changed.

But probably still not enough, I fear.

This may have been said before, but to re-iterate: 'It's just you'

In that case, it's down to the lake with them.

It's actually for me, i have had hundreds of Land Rovers over the years
as second cars, i fancy something a bit different for a change.

I found the 1.8 engine horrible compared to the 1.6, might have been the
car, but i have driven a few & the 1.6 seems nicer. Turbo is the way i'm
    going....

    I've never driven a 1.6 so I don't know any better. Don't fancy a
turbo. I like the simplicity of the MX5. No ABS, power steering or
even electric windows on mine. I thought early 1.6s sometimes had
problems with the 'crank nose' ? - paging Timo.

That's very early ones - cheapest fix is to swap in a long nose 1.6
engine. Problem is that you don't tend to notice it until it's too
    late.

Nige, make sure you get a decent turbo kit, there are an awful lot of
crap ones around. Some of the manifolds are prone to cracking, which
doesn't help. Ideally you'd want something that comes with a better fuel
management solution that an adjustable fuel pressure regulator (ie, you
want either a replacement ECU or a piggyback), decent intercooler and
decent piping. Well thought out ones also come with bigger injectors and
    an uprated fuel pump.

With a good, safe map, a turbo'd intercooled 1.6 should net between
160-180bhp, which almost gets it into early Elise territory on the
track once you throw a little money at the suspension.

Personally I prefer superchargers for the 'big engine' feel and more low
down grunt but for outright power you need a turbo.

BTW, for a turbo 1.6, I'd put 1.8 brakes on it (simple swap) and a 1.8
torsen LSD. The latter is much stronger than the 1.6VnosomuchLSDanymore
and pretty much removes the only weak point in the drive train up to
    about 250bhp.

Bugger, now I want one again and they're a lot more expensive over
    here.

If someone failing to snip has you fearing, I suspect your manliness isn't
    doing too well.

    <snip interesting stuff>

Serious question here: after laying out all that money for goodies, is
there not a faster car that one could buy instead for the same dosh?

Depends on what you want from the car - if you buy a pre-converted one,
probably not. If you build it yourself, you might find something that's
faster in a straight line or around corners (say, an Elise) but it's got
to be pretty good to touch a properly built MX5.

Ah. I guess there's also the "I dun that!" factor.
