A bunch of us from various email lists/bulletin boards are getting
together on Sunday 23rd May for a rideout. We're meeting at the Little
Thief on the A419 at Blunsdon, on the North edge of Swindon. 9:30 for a
    full English, leaving at 10:15.

We'll be heading West through the Forest of Dean, stopping for coffee at
Abergavenny bus station, then off into deepest darkest Wales. All MVs
welcome. We've currently got 3 Sennas coming, including the one featured
in this month's Superbike magazine, several F4s and a Brutale.

Any changes to schedule or cancellation due to weather will be posted on
    the website in my sig.

Out of interest, what exactly is the thinking behind organising a ride out
exclusively for one make of bike?

So that everyone there is on the same make of bike? You see, young
Porl, variety is the spice of life, but too much spice can make you
poorly. So it's good to have a bit of gruel now and again.

I understand why you might have a Goldwing group, like a caravan club in
case you get attacked by other irate road users; and a track day for certain
makes which is sponsored by the manufacturer or specialised shop with the
vested interest. I've even seen a house fly. But I ain't got a grip on why
you'd want to restrict a private ride out for one make. Perhaps there's a
level of smugness and back slapping involved. You can pat each other on the
back secure in the knowledge that someone else shares your choice of bike.
    It's a mystery I tells ya.

I can sort of understand the appeal. I don't think I'd bother much
myself with such doings however. It does mean that no-one there is
going to be slagging off your bike.

It can also sort the men from the boys - none of this 'my sort of bike
only goes along straight wide roads' stuff like SteveH comes out with if
all the others have just negotiated the switchback road from hell.

It's a pretty common mystery. Adds to list of possible dissertation
subjects. I'm sure there's 10,000 words of suitably pretentious bollocks
to be written on the subject. Just a copy & paste job from here.

The OP mentions an internet forum. I've used these to get information on
my bikes. Inevitably, you will meet some of the other forum users IRL
and go for a ride with them. Just as happens on UKRM. The mystery is how
Porl has failed to work this out.

I apologise for that oversight - along with "it's not possible to

I think it's amusing when bikers want to be in a club based on motorcycle
choice, as amusing as any slice of society whose interaction with others has
a foundation completely unrelated to their personal qualities such as
football fans, Unix vs Windows, sportsbikes vs whatever, etc. It seems we
all just want to belong to a group. It's almost as if it's symptomatic of
other weightier issues that we form groups around...

Never seen a UKRM rideout that has restricted attendance of anyone btw. But
thanks Wessie, you've made an interesting point by being a BMW owner and
    contributing to the associated stereotype.

Originally it was just an excuse for members of the Yahoo MV group to
get together. Then we decided to open it up to the other MV forums which
some of us hang around in. I guess it's just a case of meeting up with
people you know through the net, who in this case just happen to own
    MVs.

The main reason for posting it here was in case there are any MV owning
lurkers who may not know about the other groups, or want to meet up &
bullshit about modifications etc. That's the only thinking behind it
really. No different from a UKRM meet except it's several groups & one
make of bike, instead of one group & several makes of bike.

While I'm here, if anyone's got any suggestions for 'must do' roads West
of Abergavenny, I'd love to hear them. I'm usually on my Tiger when I
head that way, & my favourite roads on that would be a nightmare on the
    MV!

  11. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
There's always a chance somebody will know how to get your bike going
again when the inevitable breakdown occurs.

It's my home patch hence the GS.

If you want to ride enthusiastically then I would advise staying off the
primary routes like the A40, A465 etc. Too many speed traps.

There are a number of lesser roads that I'd be happy to take a sports bike
    on:
B4246 to Blaenavon, turn right B4248 to Brynmawr/Beaufort
B4560 to Llangynidr (superb road across a mountain)
    B4558 to Talybont, Brecon
B4520 via Upper Chapel, Mynydd Eppynt to Garth

There's a start. I'll leave you to find your way back.

The main reason (for me) is to share knowledge about my bike. If I want
to know what the best tyres are, then I'm more likely to get a meaningful
answer from other Tiger riders than from folk on R1s, or GoldWing. Or if
I want to know who makes a good silencer, or what the torque setting for
    some obscure bolt is.

Naturally enough, people who patronise these forums get it into their
heads to meet up, and ride outs are the obvious thing.
