PARIS, June 15 (Reuters) - French tyre group Michelin (MICP.PA: Quote,
Profile, Research) said on Friday it was recalling some 68,000
motorbike tyres after finding a possible defect in their tread due to a
    manufacturing fault.

The company said it would recall the Pilot Power 2CT and Pilot Power
120/70 ZR 17 front motorcycle tyres. A Michelin spokeswoman said the
recall would affect tyres sold in 40 countries in north America and
    Europe.

Michelin added no accidents had occured as a result of the fault.

Hmmm. It would be handier if it was the rear as that is definitely
    beginning to show significant wear.

    From the Michelin website:

    "(STOKE-ON-TRENT – 15 June 2007) – Michelin has launched a campaign to
recall its Pilot Power 2CT and Pilot Power 120/70 ZR 17 front motorcycle
tyres with “Made in France” markings. An examination of these tyres
showed a possible defect in the tread due to a manufacturing
irregularity. No cases of pressure loss have been reported and no
    accidents have occurred.

Because customer safety is its primary concern, Michelin has decided as
a precaution to replace certain 120/70 ZR 17 Michelin Pilot Power 2CT
and Michelin Pilot Power front tyres, which can be identified by the
    following markings on the sidewall:

    * a “Made in France” label
    * DOT 6UCW 980T or DOT 6UCW 979T

These tyres will no longer be sold by dealers.

A special telephone number for consumers has been set up to provide
customers with information about the campaign and will be operational on
    Monday 18 June from 8.30 a.m.

    The telephone numbers are:

    UK : 0800 454774
    Republic of Ireland: 0044 (0)1782 401535"

    Got one.
Thanks for that. Three hill climbs coming up over the next month. TBH I
think I would rather stay with the very nicely scrubbed in 'dodgy' one I
have on now for them. Comforting that it didn't do anything nasty while
circulating the Island in a fairly spirited manner.

Bugger. Thanks for the heads up though.

Will have to give them a call and see what they're doing about it.

Called michelin this morning and my front needs replacing and I should
contact my tyre dealer and they'll sort it out for me. No idea of
timescale yet but they said that riding in within the speed limit to
the tyre dealer wouldn't be a problem. The tyre dealer didn't know
anything about it but I've emailed him the link and he's chasing it up
    for me.

Well that info from Michelin was bollocks. They were supposed to take
me details and then send me a letter detailing when and where I can get
the tyre changed. They've done that now and told me it could be a week
or two. They've also advised me not to over over the national speed
limit and not to do any track days.

As my tyre dealer pointed out the date range is pretty wide so the
number of failures must be a miniscule proportion of the number of
tyres sold so I'll just carry on riding the bike as normal until the
    tyre gets changed.

    Regards,

I phoned them and although on hold for a while I eventually spoke to a
nice bloke who told me that after the TBA number there would be a four
figure which correlates to the week and year.

range for this figure for duff tyres is 4505 to 1807 so for 18 months
they were producing a duff tyre.

needless to say, mine was 0907 so needs replacing.

they said to phone the place i got it from and they'd replace it,
doing a ride in ride out even though i'd not done that when i bought
    it.

They told me earlier in the week they would send a letter to me about it.
I'm still waiting for the letter to arrive but called the tyre shop this
morning and he said they need the letter will have a code, and they need
that code before they can order the tyre. Apparently. michelin have frozen
all stock of this tyre and will only release it if the dealer has the code -
to ensure current stocks get to those needing replacement.

I'm waiting for my letter too.

I had to tell the bike shop and my local tyre dealers about the
    recall.

I've replaced a few of them so far at work, and not one has shown any
signs of failing. I'm pretty sure there were one or two isolated cases
and Michelin are doing the right thing and recalling every single one.
The guy who started this off has admitted on a Gixer forum that he was
speeding at xxxmph on his GSXR1000K3 when it happened. When michelin
asked for the tyre so he could inspect it, he sent it to MCN
    instead....****.

There must be many people who haven't heard about the recall. If it
wasn't for UKRM I would be blissfully unaware. I haven't seen anything
in the main stream media and I don't buy the comic.

That's got the stink of gixer forum bullshit about it because Michelin
claim they've discovered a tread defect and that's why they're
    recalling them all.

I don't know if Michelin have started to inform suppliers about the
problem yet but the first that Flitwick motorcycles and the tyre
dealers in Bedford we use heard about it was when Adie told them.

true but FM gave me a copy of the recall notification when I took it
    in last week.

I also phoned Michelin yesterday as said that I needed a new tyre in
time for chimay and they upgraded my recall to urgent and that they'd
get someone to phone me with a "number" that I could use to get my
tyre done (I said that the only time I could do it would be this
    week).

Needless to say no-one phoned back so I'll be calling them again
    tomorrow.

thanks for this. found it eventually.

spoke to michelin today and they've given me a number!

they're sending a package tomorrow to my tyre dealer and i should be
able to get it fitted saturday.

what they haven't told the dealer yet (may be in the package) is
whether they will pay for ride in ride out. they said they would to me
so if i have to pay it i'll be billing them.

    Don't be stupid.

Go and try taking the front wheel out of your bike without removing
    the calipers.

Got me completely baffled there - I can't for the life of me imagine
why you'd need to do so. It's been a while[1] since I've done it
myself, but I've stood by and watched tyre changes dozens of times on
modern twin-disk bikes and never seen anyone remove the calipers.
